Planet Green, Discovery Communications’ global, cross-platform environmental brand, today announced that it is partnering nationwide with the Green Apple Festival and the non-profit organization Earth Day Network to promote environmental volunteer activities in ten U.S. cities including New York, Boston, Washington, D.C., Atlanta, Chicago, Denver, Austin, Los Angeles, San Francisco and Seattle from April 17-19. In addition to a “call to action” airing on Planet Green, the first and only 24/7 eco lifestyle channel, PlanetGreen.com will host the volunteer event registration and some of the network’s most dynamic experts and personalities will be masters of ceremonies at “Thank You” concerts in the participating cities.

“On-air, online and in the daily lives of our audiences, Planet Green’s mission is to engage and empower people to take action and make a difference in their homes, their communities and for the future of our planet,” said Laura Michalchyshyn, President and General Manager, Planet Green. “Green Apple Festival has created an amazing cross-country volunteer opportunity for people to participate in projects that target issues in their own backyards. Green Apple Festival’s Earth Day Action Weekend is a perfect extension of the content and resources Planet Green offers 365 days a year.”

Starting today, Planet Green viewers will be encouraged to go to planetgreen.com/volunteer to sign up for volunteer opportunities in their city of choice through a special promotional spot. Once on PlanetGreen.com, volunteers can choose from a number of different events offered in each city.

The weekend of activity and service will culminate on Sunday, April 19 with free night time “Thank You” concerts for volunteers at popular music venues in each participating city. In Washington, D.C., “Earth Day on the National Mall” is a free festival open to volunteers and to the public that will feature performances and speakers throughout the day. Hosts and experts from a number of Planet Green’s popular series will be on-hand to inspire crowds in a number of locations including Steve Thomas of RENOVATION NATION in Washington, D.C.; Holter Graham, co-host of WA$TED!, in Boston; Jodi Murphy of TOTAL WRECKLAMATION in Chicago; Boise Thomas of ALTER ECO in Los Angeles; Summer Rayne Oakes, author, activist and Planet Green correspondent in New York City; and, Graham Hill, TreeHugger Founder, in San Francisco.

In addition to partnering with the Green Apple Festival this April, Planet Green will lead Discovery Communications’ company-wide, multi-platform “Earth Month” initiative to help inspire, inform and motivate people of all ages to take action for the future of the planet. Discovery will feature original eco-focused content across its family of networks, digital platforms and mobile channels.
