WAZ: The Sweet Bye and Bye – CD Review

14_0745Rock never sounded so sweet. WAZ has a way about its music that makes it sound more than just “Rock” and is, I think anyway, more along the lines of a James Taylor because the lyrics are very melodic, there is more acoustic work than electric and the most noticeable similarity is that the music tells a story. I am a fan of any music that sounds really tight and crisp and can weave a lovely tale in order to get the listened invested into the music. WAZ had me invested by the first struck chord.

Rock is supposed to have a bit of hardness to it. It is supposed to be against society or simply for the good things in life like sex and drugs. Not WAZ. It is about as hard as rice pudding. It really is a good that I love rice pudding then, right? It may be an old man dessert but WAZ is not. Despite WAZ being more along the lines of Jell-O music and not rock it was still nice listening. I like acoustic music and a lot of guitar. I wish it was cleaner though – the production suffers for it, but on the Devil’s Advocate side it adds a certain truth to the work.

Could have been more rock and less pop? Of course. There were riffs and lyrics I heard that could easily be turned around to garner a bit more edge to the songs. Hardly Enough and She’s Gone are both good songs that have nice acoustical value and great lyrics with soul. I was hoping for some hard knocks but they never came.

There comes a time when all things change – that time is not here yet for the rock genre. It should still crush your innards and make you want to punch a wall. WAZ, more or less, wants to get you to hug a tree or something. WAZ is to Rock music as DMX is to classical music. But hey – they work well – just don’t listen to the music expecting something like Nickelback or whatever because you will be sad and I do not want to see you cry.

All in all WAZ is tight group – not very rock – but they do not suck either. In fact they are quite talented and I enjoyed what I heard quite a bit. Maybe next time they cut the songs with more of an edge instead of being a bit wishy washy.
