Sylvarluxe: Big Bang – CD Review

14_0701When I see a description of a band that reads Alternative & Punk you are kind of set up into believing that you will be hearing something that is heavy sounding. You are expecting something that is raw, robust and deep politically. With a name like Sylvarluxe – which means nothing actually – it just looks cool. Again – you are expecting something along the lines of thrashing, ear bleeding sounds. *deep sigh* NONE of it. Absolutely none of it came to fruition. It was an utter disappointment to say the least. There was nothing anti-political about it. There was not a damn thing even remotely thrashing about it. And, dare Is ay, there was nothing punk and certainly not even anything alternative about it! It was – without a shadow of a doubt – the worst possible genre to plug these guys in.

Of course – that is assuming that there was more than one person. It really is hard to tell if there is even a musical line-up when everything is coming out of drum machines or something that sure as hell sounded like one. With that said when was the last time you heard electronic crap come out of a punk band? Sure – you can have keyboards in alternative music but not very often. So what the hell are they doing here? I really don’t know.

I want to say something nice about Sylvarluxe, but I am having a really tough time in doing so. They are not punk and they sure are not alternative at least by the musical definition of the word. They are alternative alternative perhaps? If you are looking for a migraine they can be the alternative to your wife, mother in law or children.

One good thing that I can say is that lyrically the songs have a lot of potential. Unfortunately, lyrics are only just half of the battle and you really have to bring it with some strong musical content. Using electronika beats when you are supposed to be punk or alternative (especially bad ones) is just not the way to go. You can afford to take the time to wait until you have some real music put together. And hey – the name of the band is pretty chill. Name and lyrics, lyrics and a name – a good start now stop wasting time with keyboards that make other sounds.
