Chris Alleyne: Saturday’s Hero – CD Review

13_0756Chris is a female pop singer by trade though her style is more of a Nora Jones type of sound. That is not pop. When I hear pop my mind goes to Britney “Don’t Take My Baby’s Away” Spears and Christina Aguillera. There is a certain idea about what pop is. It’s bubble gum fop. It has no meaning, no sense, no substance – it basically exists to rip your money from your hands to get you to buy the next Myley Cyrus CD or whatever. There is no soul – it is a lifeless, dead mass of regurgitated sounds and ideals.

Thank the heavens for artists like Chris Alleyne. Her CD “Saturday’s Hero” is excellent craftsmanship. With that being said there is no way it can be pop music. It has a life and a soul all its own and needs to be shared with the world. There is nothing forced about it or even remotely canned. The music itself is simple – simply good. You don’t expect changing chords down a ladder or whatever. You don’t expect wicked Tommy Lee drum solos or some studio musician snob getting an ego trip off of their sheer “perfection”, no. What you get here is a bit of music that transcends the run of the mill junk you see bombarding your ear drums.

Saturday’s Hero is sophisticated, bluesy music – keyword is MUSIC here, folks. Not a Chihuahua call. Or “Hey – look at my ass – ain’t it phat?” no, no, no. This is a good thing otherwise I would have to hang myself from a short rope attached to a rather long pole. “The Way Things Used to Be” is something out of a 1950’s smokey blues or jazz bar that has a lot of rhythm and soul to its lyrical content and musical arrangement. There is enough heart and soul to touch you and enough groove to move you in ways you never thought you could move.

Kudos to some great artistry.
