The Ginger Ninjas: The Pleasant Revolution – CD Review

12_0610Confusion sets in… I can’t tell if the Ginger Ninjas were being facetious or not in their song about Vice President Dick Cheney. I mean – who can honestly look at the man and want to give him a bit of “love” or understanding? I can’t make myself want to give him more love. The whole song – obviously – is meant to be tongue and cheek. It is funny – sarcastic and quite brilliantly put together with good musical skill and singing. It proves you can be damn funny and damn musically gifted all at the same time.

I was not really sure what to think about the Ginger Ninjas. They have some various styles going on from Reggae, Rock and Blues to what I can only describe and Polish and Russian instrumentation with the most evil of all instruments: the accordion. But this is all so very intriguing because the lyrics are fascinating throughout the entire CD and the music itself is brilliantly arranged and it all works despite the odd combination of things. It’s like a mincemeat pie – you don’t think you are going to like it until you actually sink your teeth into it then you come to find out it is just kind of nutty.

The Ginger Ninjas kept me on my toes and held my fascination through every song. There is nothing super out there – the music is basically arranged and played with expertise that many novices can achieve in a short time. The difference is that everything works to a flawless crescendo. Any artist looking to combine styles and sounds should look to the Ginger Ninjas for a little inspiration on how to do it correctly.

The best song, by far, is “Blank”. It takes bits and pieces from each style they use to create something that is just so beautiful and filled with a ton of meaning. It reminds me of the Counting Crows meets Bob Marley and U2. It is superb musical craftsmanship.
