YWCAs to Observe National Women and Girls HIV and AIDS Awareness Day on March 10th

New Public Service Ad Aimed at Young Women

YWCAs across the country are joining the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services’ Office on Women’s Health in observing National Women and Girls HIV and AIDS Awareness Day on March 10 by hosting a variety of activities, such as educational sessions, HIV testing events and community outreach.

National Women and Girls HIV and AIDS Awareness Day aims to raise public awareness of the impact of HIV and AIDS on women and girls, and also encourage them to understand their HIV risk factors, take actions to prevent HIV infection, get an HIV test and, if infected, seek prompt medical care that can help them keep them healthy.

Moreover, since AIDS is a leading cause of death for younger Black women ages 25 to 34, as well as the fourth leading cause of death for Hispanic women ages 35 to 44, YWCAs will be observing this day to raise public awareness of the disproportionate impact HIV and AIDS has on them.

“HIV and AIDS are taking a terrible toll on women of color. We have just released a new public service advertisement (PSA) that aims to motivate younger women to prevent infection and get an HIV test,” said Lorraine Cole, PhD, YWCA USA’s CEO. “We also want to encourage all women to talk to their friends about getting tested and stop the spread of this deadly disease in their communities.” Go here to view the new PSA ad.

The YWCA USA also maintains an online women and girls HIV and AIDS Resource Center at http://www.ywca.org/
