Mainspring Collective Presents MEDEA – Theatrical Review In order to create a prosperous theater company from the ground up, it takes extreme talent, patience, and determination. Mainspring Collective, founded by four women, all Indiana University graduates, exceeds the expectations of skeptics with their first production ever, of Euripides’ MEDEA, housed at The Producers Club in Manhattan.
With this more modern version, the audience is brought to1950’s suburbia where women struggle to find their voice. The original dialogue was not changed to accommodate the drastic period disparity which allows an even greater understanding of this ancient Greek masterpiece.
Medea, played exquisitely by Hannah Ryan Smith, struggles with the pain of losing her marriage to another woman from a powerful family. Medea has sacrificed all she’s known – her country, her family, just to be exiled by her new enemy’s father. In the remaining time, Medea turns the lives of all those around her upside down by making a few bloody and tragic decisions. Smith’s fellow actors and actresses share the same passion in their roles under the impressive direction of Hilary Krishnan, a co-founder of Mainspring Collective.
MEDEA takes an intimate look into the life of one woman on the brink of social and emotional destruction. The Producers Clubs’ black box auditorium has the audience close enough to feel the power of the cast and whether it’s laughing, crying, or taking a moment to soak up the poignancy of the play’s message, MEDEA’s cast and crew have proved themselves as forces to be reckoned with.
The founders have had extensive theater training combined with a love for the stage. When put together this creates an excellent production. The founding members of Mainspring Collective are Laine Bonstein, Hilary Krishnan, Hannah Smith, and Jenna Weinberg, four passionate women whose voices merit listening.
