On Friday, May 24, 2019, New York City students joined their fellow students in over 100 countries in the second Global Climate Strike. Students gathered in Columbus Circle in New York City and marched to Times Square where they staged an eleven-minute die-in. They demand that Mayor Bill de Blasio issue a climate emergency following cities like Constance, Germany, and Milan, Italy and countries like the United Kingdom and Ireland.
According to a new study, published on Monday by PNAS, Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences global sea leaves could rise by over 6 feet by 2100, twice as much than previous studies had predicted. Glaciers in Greenland and Antarctica are melting at a faster rate than expected, and large parts of low-lying countries and cities would become uninhabitable and agricultural areas would be lost.
Experts have warned that global carbon emissions have to be cut within the next ten years to avoid the worst consequences like storms, flooding, droughts, and starvation.
