Music Review: Pepperdome ‘False Words About Large Days’

Pepperdome-FWALD-Cover-500x500-300x300And now the award for album title that is completely lost on me – it’s Pepperdome with ‘False Words About Large Days.’

I admit it, I’m a weirdo. I like weird things. I’m into bizarre music that sometimes is silly, but most times I’m a sucker for mesmerizing guitar riffs and throbbing bass lines. And now apparently I’m obsessed with a hard rock trio out of North Carolina. If you look them up on Facebook (which I’m guessing you already did), then you see this outfit’s influences include Metallica, Pantera, Rush and Primus.

If you ask me, add Frank Zappa, Devo and maybe System of a Down to the list. Pepperdome seems to ignite some sort of crazy music demon in me that I can’t stop listening to the 12- tracks, including “Calling for Help” in its nearly seven-minute time lapse.

“Picture Box” grabbed me pretty hard, pretty quickly. But, at first I wasn’t so sure about the vocals. They seemed a little, oh, weird. Like, is he singing or talking? Is he lecturing or reading from a journal? What’s happening here?

“Impotent Hypocrite” has this killer bass introduction. Its unnerving as much as it is a guilty pleasure. I suppose its like the pain some people get addicted to, when they start getting tattoos over and over.

“Stand Tall” does just that – it brings to new heights simplistic lyrics mashed with heavy riffs and clawing bass lines.

“99 Strong” and “Inline” collides the listener with reality and in-your-face rock. The lyrics are so real. “Let Go” and “Suicide Seed” engage the listener to move out of their comfort zone and really look at themselves in the mirror.

I have to give Pepperdome’s ‘False Words About Large Days’ a massive A. Okay, I take that back, give it an A+. Maybe I’m just weird, but these concoctions had me drunk with progressive rock, modest vocals, interesting lyrics and locked-in instrumentations. All systems go on this one!
