Family Weekend (2013) – Movie Review

20130503_2011Family weekend is a beautiful and endearing movie recommended for all families to watch. As an antidote to the disintegration of families, it is an eye opener that will remind us to stick to proven  and tested values that will safeguard our family and make it even stronger.

It belongs to the comedy, drama genre under the direction of Benjamin Epps. The plot is nice and  the characters are played by stars like: Kristin Chenoweth as Samantha Smith-Dungy, Matthew Modine as Duncan Dungy, Olesya Rulin as Emily Smith-Dungy, Joey King as Lucinda Smith-Dungy, Shirley Jones as GG, Eddie Hassell as Jackson Smith-Dungy, Robbie Tucker as  Mickey Smith-Dungy,  Adam Saunders as Rick, Chloe Bridges as Kat and  Chase Maser as Chris.

Among the characters, I like Emily because of her intense desire to make their family stick together just like the way they used to be. I  find Rick’s character funny,  and at such a young age, I am amused at how Lucinda acts like a grown up woman. Shirly is such a witty grandma while Jackson is a guy who pretends to be gay.

The movie opens with Emily sticking notes on every corner of the house to remind her family members to watch her school’s speed jump regional competition. No one in her family shows up to share her joy of being  the winner in the contest,  qualifying her to join the state finals on Sunday.

All that Emily wants is for them to watch the state finals, but no one’s available. Mom has work and dad has some paintings to be done which is the usual scenario in their home. People just don’t have time for each other.

In desperation, Emily devises a plan to save her family from total collapse or at least to make her parents realize  what they have been missing as a family. With the help of her siblings, she takes her parents hostage inside their house.

With Jackson as the videographer and Lucinda  on the lookout for visitors, Emily executes the plan of teaching her parents rules on better parenting and establishing a nice family environment. But Kat and Rick’s unexpected visits are not part of the plan.

“It takes time to make something beautiful” is a statement of Duncan that strikes me. This is indeed true not only with painting  but  in family relationship as well.  All I can say is this is a good movie to watch. Some scenes made me cry actually.  Simple plot, nice dialogues, lively soundtracks  and superb acting abilities of all the stars  are what makes me give this movie an A rating.

Given the chance, I want to revisit the movie all over again  to remind me of my role as a parent  and as a reminder that  aside from money, cars, clothes etc, there’s lots more a family needs in order to stick together and be happy.
