Evil Dead (2013) – Movie Review

20130417_2025Curiosity can kill.

Those who  don’t know how to follow the rules will reap disaster.

The Evil Dead is a 91 minutes  film belonging to the horror genre. It is a remake of the Evil Dead versions of 1981 and 1987.

It is about  the story of  five friends  who went on

their way to a remote cabin far from the hustle and bustle of their normal lives,  to bond and spend time together. Apparently, what they expect to be a peaceful vacation would turn out into a nightmare for all of them.

Eric opens the book they found at the cellar. Although it contains the warning, “not to read from it”,  he did not follow it. As a result,  an evil power was unleashed possessing one of them. Then a series of strange events happened which include the death of their dog, Grandpa, Mia’s ridiculous actions  which they think is due to her drug problem and so on…

Mia in a possessed voice declares that they are  going to die that very night. What follows are gory and bloody scenes resulting to the death of Olivia.

The remaining three people needed to contend with the demonic Mia. Nothing happens as they try to burn the book to stop their nightmare. With the opening  of  the book, the Abomination also came out gaining possession of the soul of Mia.

Because of the bloody and gory scenes, as well as the violence and sexual content involved in the story,  this movie is not for the young ones or the faint hearted.

When I heard Mia with her pronouncement that they would die that night, I was terrified. The words were as if directed to me and I needed to cling to someone stronger or else I would have a nightmare myself.

They  struggled to fight for their lives, until one is left standing, and that is Mia. Eric and David were killed by the fire inside the cabin.

Now it’s just between Mia and the Abomination. With all her might, she manages to fight and kills her opponent with a chainsaw.

I can say that the photos and lighting came out right as  well as the sound effects, but there are some weak points in the story and cinematography.

The movie was made under the direction of Fede Alvarez, and with the major characters played by Jane Levy as Mia, Shiloh Fernandez as David, Lou Taylor Pucci as Eric, Jessica Lucas as Olivia and Elizabeth Blackmore as Natalie.  This  may not be the best movie as compared with the previous Evil Dead versions  in terms of overall impact and quality, but there are also something good to be said about it. It has entertained and frightened me and I don’t see any problem in  making a wayward girl  to be in the lead role.  Since this is just a remake, there will always be points of comparison, but things are not made equal though.

Although it has a rather  weak characterization that does not  have that endearment or appeal to the audience, no movie ever produced is perfect.  Each of them has flaws or  something to improve on. More so with the Evil Dead because since it is a remake, people expects much from it.

If the film would have followed the typical plot of the earlier versions, there will be no more originality and  differentiation  to it.
