Dawes: Stories Don’t End – Music Review

There’s a reason why this California indie-folk band is the perfect opener for Bob Dylan on his current college tour and you can hear it throughout their third studio album Stories Don’t End. Dawes emanate that 70’s Laurel Canyon rock era sound, bringing influences from CSNY (track “From a Window Seat”), Jackson Browne (track “Most People”), the Band (pretty much in every song) and of course Dylan.

While Stories brings about a new, softer sound that’s a bit polished and less country driven than their last release Nothing is Wrong, Dawes stay true to who they are: something that’s familiar and always comforting. Songwriter and lead singer/guitarist Taylor Goldsmith takes you on a romantic journey, giving the album the feel of a soundtrack to an epic story, flowing seamlessly from one track to another. The cover of Blake Mills’ “Hey Lover” fits nicely within Stories tone and vision, giving the band a chance to rock out and let loose.

This album is a nice departure from Dawes’ previous country-blues tendency and makes one excited see what this band has in store for their fans in the future. Highlight tracks include “From a Window Seat”, “Something in Common”, “Bear Witness” and the title track “Stories Don’t End”.
