Early Girl: Forever We Can Change – Music Review

How does one evolve as an artist from such disparate worlds as Opera to R&B to Jazz, Pop and even Country music styles? This question is answered in every note of EARLY GIRL’s debut album and singer Gina Longo’s voice. She have have taken a circular path to find where she truly belongs, but now that she has found her artistic true north, the path in front of her should be clear.

EARLY GIRL is a really a collaboration between Longo and songwriter-producer Michael-Louis de Terre. While the songs on Forever We Change are definitely a vehicle for Longo, she is neither out in front too far from the band and totally in the pocket of each track. Longo has a really malleable voice and de Terre has written expertly for her ever changing timbre. Songs like “Spy Song”, “You Leave Me” and “Never Try To Change You” have a bit of Dixie-fried, defiance and sass that I love to hear in a song. The songs are upbeat and uplifting too. “Fade In the Night” is a beautiful piece of rock balladry. Longo is vulnerable when she needs to be, pitch perfect in the melody and rocking enough naturally to carry the song. That word passion comes up for me again and again listening to

her on these songs. De Terre has a great sensibility for what works and I like that he eschewed all of the trad types of songs someone else, might have shot for and failed. Clever tunes like “Stand Up” and “Easy Money” go for the unique factor with old-school sounds (1960s pop and bossa nova respectively) and just let Longo work her magic over the tracks. The title track sums things up nicely for the album and this review. The comforting ring of the chords over a slick beat give you pause, while beautiful vocals fill your ears. The chorus veers back to pop country again and it sounds golden. I wonder what these two will come up with next? I for one, can’t wait.
