Overhate: Relentless Is Our Strength – Music Review

Hailing from Caracas, Venezuela comes the impressive and heavy OVERHATE. On their new album Relentless is Our Strength the band displays their thrash and modern metal influences with an uncommon realness and grit that I like to hear. Many bands merely take their beloved influences, add in some modern musical components and bam- instant metal band. However, in OVERHATE we seen a band that has been around for a few years, sharpening their considerable chops and working on their songwriting until their have a fierce weapon in their hands.

Blasting out of the gate with “When Nothing’s Mine” you catch the distinct ingredients the band is cooking with. Thrash, Death and Black metal styles tie into a ruthless soundtrack full of anguish and evil focus. The main riff is catchy in a classic way, but the guitar tones are all 2012. Fans of LAMB OF GOD (#FreeRandyBlythe) and MACHINE HEAD will love the tempo change in the chorus. The band definitely has chops for days, especially drummer Joseph Ortiz who is their secret weapon. Vocalist Giancarlo Vettor has a strong voice and can scream, rant like a hardcore singer or actually carry a tuneful melody in the same song. He even harmonizes with himself on a few cuts in strong fashion.

Tracks like “International Slavery Song” not only show their ability to write tight songs, the lyrics are thought provoking and clever too. “With Us or Against Us” is an epic piece and one of my favorite tracks on the album. Another political minded track, the song has a great marching power groove beat in the best tradition of SLAYER, TESTAMENT and PANTERA. The bands’ progressive and tech metal roots come out about halfway through the cut and the results are a great jamming song. Vettor and his partner on guitar Erik Machado can grind out riffs and shred a bit too. There is some classic harmony guitar work as well as some textural parts. “From The Shadows” is a bit on the commercial side, but still very heavy. It made me think of HATEBREED vocally and has another cool head-nodding beat.

It is getting tougher all the time for metal bands to differentiate from others without resorting to trickery, samples or the dreaded bass drop. OVERHATE relies on none of these things to make music. They just write good songs like “In This Disgusting Planet”, the epic “4204 (A Soldier’s Tragical Ending)”, and the over the top brutal “Figure of Deception”. I hope to hear more buy 25mg viagra from these emissaries of metal as they are sure to earn more recognition in the future.
