Something this record doesn’t lack- dancefull-clap-tastic beats. The Foxglove Hunt have been able to pull off a cliche’ 80’s sounding record with only a few minor setbacks. The effectiveness of the songs lies in the fact that they all sound like ‘something you have heard before’ but in a refreshed way. The tracks are reminiscent of tunes your ears will recognize and place in the 1980s but you’re not sure why.
The first track, “A concealed weapon”, eases one into the record with it’s open sounding beginning riff and beat drop getting the listener into dance mode. The second track already highlights the only negative side in mimicking music from another time- “strength early” sound comes off as being slightly cheesy along with later tracks “the mayflower compact” and “the pure in heart”.
“Business Casual” and “The life highrise” are two huge indie club night singles waiting for release. Both posses catchy and rhythm-full beats that coupled with their strong synth riffs are the recipe for dance parties anywhere. In particular “the life highrise” with it’s dark quality captures and places one right in the middle of a dance floor circa 1985 surrounded by young yuppy new yorkers dancing a la American Psycho.
As the record progresses, we have a see-saw of happy upbeat handclap-full songs alternated by darker and slightly more introverted dance numbers that bring the listener through a downright amazing roller-coaster ride. Through bell chimes, claps, synth arps, drum loops and nasally delivered vocals, this package seems to be quite complete The sound of the record seems to be influenced by acts along the lines of Depeche Mode, The Cure, and even Genesis but with a new indie approach who’s sound seems to be achieved by a couple synths, a laptop, guitar, drum machine and drum set operated by two band members. Quite a remarkable full length that will get better and more stuck in your head with every listen.
