John Gillette: All Bad – Music Review

The best word I can think of to describe “All Bad” is slick. From the packaging to the performance and production, John Gillette busts some pretty impressive musical moves. One of the many things that Gillette can claim the bragging rights to is that he brought Grammy nominated producers The Midi Mafia (DJ Swift and Bruce Waynne) on deck to engineer, produce, mix and even write a good number of the LP’s tracks.

One of the major mistakes the major labels have made over the past decade or so is releasing albums that have little more than one solid track on the record. This is not the case with “All Bad”. In fact, this album is packed with potential hit singles. So much so, that it’s hard for this reviewer to narrow down just a few favorites to fit into the review space allotted here. But I’ll do my best.

The title track, “All Bad”, is simply hypnotic. You may hear it only once but like a subconscious suggestion it continues to be virtually impossible to get it out of your mind. It has more hooks than my girlfriend’s sexiest lingerie. Great melody set to a mid-tempo rhythm with a pumping production that just won’t stop. From the dance floor to the bedroom this cut should become an anthem for those looking to make some almighty love noise all night long!

“Raise The Bar” (the only song not produced by The Midi Mafia) does exactly what it promises to do. This ditty is a dancer’s delight which comes as no surprise when you take into account the performer’s past. Gillette is an accomplished dancer as well as a hip-hop dance instructor and choreographer. His resume “dance card” includes dancing for the U.S, Olympics, choreographed and danced for the NBA Denver Nuggets Dancers and the NFL Dance Squad. So this fleet footed fellow really does have all the moves.

“Party Of The Year” and “Battery” also keep the heat turned up high on this great collection that could be seen as John’s first step on a great journey to mega-stardom. But all is not perfect on this almost perfect piece of work. Why I certainly laud the above mentioned title track, “All Bad” as a virtuously seamless single I believe it falls fault to one flaw. When the synth string section comes in on the chorus it takes away, instead of adding to the all over production. Those damn strings are just way too LOUD!

All in all “All Bad” is an amazing first effort for a new artist. John Gillette is a master of not only dance music but hip-hop and R&B. He’s got the flow, the groove, the moves and the charm. I see triple platinum in his future. Not bad at all!
