2010 – The Year of the MIGHTY TIGER! New Album, Western Theater, + Limited Edition 7” Vinyl for ‘33 1/3’ with B-side remix from Big Spider’s Back – Available March 9th + West Coast Tour with Grand Hallway

“There’s obviously something Sufjan Stevens-y about Mighty Tiger: the voices raised in chorus, the ornate instrumentation, the bold fearlessness of taking masculine vocals up to the higher, soprano end of the scale. Some of their songs sound as though they could fit into the soundtrack of a Wes Anderson movie with no problem at all. But there’s an edge to their music, a willingness to actually rock, that has pushed Mighty Tiger up on my playlist: They’re proof that you can make sensitive, thoughtful music and not sound like a namby-pamby, weak-kneed wuss.”The Stranger

According to Chinese Zodiac, the tiger is one of the most beautiful creatures on the planet, and is feared and revered in equal measure. It is featured in many Asian cultures as a manifestation of courage, power, passion and royalty. In Imperial China, where the dragon is the insignia of the emperors, the tiger is the military emblem of the highest supreme commanders of the army symbolizing fearlessness and victory.

As fate would have it this year, the year of the Tiger, Paper Garden Records’ own Mighty Tiger releases its debut album, Western Theater. With a limited edition 7” vinyl featuring “33 1/3” and a B-side remix of the song from Big Spider’s Back, the album will be available digitally alongside the vinyl that includes the full album download on March 9th, 2010.

BIO

“Well, at least it’s not a forest animal but still, another ‘animal’ band name? And isn’t that from Bungalow Bill? Just what we need, another 60’s obsessed indie-pop band.”

We know you’re thinking it. But shared devotion and common inspiration sometimes brings like-minded people together in ways that become greater than the sum of the parts. Case in point: Mighty Tiger. With its members emerging from the Midwest and the Southwest, this particular collection of musicians found their counterparts in the dreary Pacific Northwestern Seattle, WA. Drawing from a diverse set of influences ranging from Harry Nilsson to The Flaming Lips, Mighty Tiger applies vintage pop sensibility to indie rock innovation, creating a sound that is uniquely their own. Forming in November 2008, Mighty Tiger wrote and recorded their debut full length album, Western Theater within the next 5 months.

Western Theater is a testament to the vision of Mighty Tiger: conceptual, cohesive, and relaxed. Sure, Mighty Tiger’s spectrum of inspiration is apparent, with nods to the sonic landscapes of Pet Sounds and Perfect from Now On. But while Mighty Tiger shows a refreshing willingness to wear its musical influences on its sleeve, the primary strength of the album is the way the band’s divergent points of reference coalesce around a sound that is truly distinct and often tastefully unpredictable; whimsical chamber pop eddies swirling in a turbulent sea of epic indie rock glory. Mighty Tiger have formulated an atmosphere in Western Theater as accessible as it is intellectual, as somber as it is light-hearted. One thing is clear about this record and about this band: Mighty Tiger wants its listeners to have as much fun listening to Western Theater as the band had making it.
