Alex Karweit: Enemy - Indie Music Review

Wow, this guitar riff is way cooler than when I first heard it done by Hendrix! Despite Alex Karweit using the same exact riff of "Purple Haze" in the begining of his song "L.A" this song is actually really good, radio friendly even! Obviously, it has good guitars but the melodys real catchy as well. I usually never listen to the title tracks of cds first because that's supposed to be the one that grabs yr attention and I don't like going in with expectations but I did now and I'm expecting a lot from Alex now.
Next up is "Knock 'Em Out", which isn't really like "L.A." as it has a somewhat dance friendly chorus. Kind of like The Killers/The Hives/those bands kinda dance friendly, the kind that all them kids with the studded belts would dance to. This one as well I wouldn't be surprised to hear on the radio and I wouldn't turn the dial.
I'm going through all the songs on this album because I'm finding that each one sounds like a different band really. If you'll notice, they're all sounding like bands played on the radio.
"A Little Bit Here" is really remniscent of Green Day's slower hits like "Walking Alone". I wasn't a big fan of that song but I have to admit, I liked it when Green Day did it better.
"Let it Go" is back to sounding somewhat like the Killers again with if you stretch it, the bridge could possibly a little Queens of the Stone Age sounding as well. Squid, my mostly punk rock and ska listening little brother is still here and he says this song is pretty good. The piano at the end is a bit too much for me.
"Choosing His Angels" starts out with a Smashing Pumpkins 'Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness' feel. I really like that album and now that I got further in this song and it's not measuring up to the Pumpkins, I don't even want to finish the rest of. This would be on your contemporary rock stations and I can already feel my teeth start to hurt to this dentist music.
"Everybody Run" really showcases all the weaknesses in Alex's vocals. He does this little 'uuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuunh!' at the end of some of his lines sometime that's remniscent of that guy who had the hit ages ago that went something like 'Now iiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii'll never fall in love', the video was black and white.....does anybody else besides Alex Karweit rememeber him?
Remember where I told you I was going to review each song seperatly? Yeah. Don't do that. I'm stopping here so I can still think good things of Alex.
On the whole, I would wait til these songs hit the radio and then tape them or just listen to the original artists. Not bad with the catchy hooks but not impressive enough to get the whole album.
