Abby Ahmad: The Rearview - Indie Music Review

Abby's first song, "Big Bang" is actually really good. I got an Ani Difranco meets Tracy Chapman feel from it. A Tracy Chapman with street cred, if you will. So like if I'm too ashamed to listen to Tracy Chapman (if other people are around) I would totally throw this CD on. Towards the end she throws in some banjos and a violin. I'm partial to banjos anyway but with a violin? Not like a 'fiddle' violin, I mean like a legit 'violin' violin. It sounds crazy but at the same time it sounds....good.
I'm home for the holidays this week and my seventeen year old brother is in the background. He said he enjoys "Postcards" but it didn't have the hook that "Big Bang" for me. But hes a strictly pop punk and ska kid so for him to appreciate someone like Abby Ahmad, I think kind of says a lot for her.
"Solo Act" starts getting very bluesy and is louder than the rest of the album but it's not in a bad way at all. Not that this album is generic but "Solo Act" provides a nice little break between the other songs.
Abby Ahmad's album is so good, not only would I download it (I'd even buy it, if she'd pay my electric bill this month) I actually attempted to download it. Usually when I tell you I'd download an album, I don't actually try because, well, I'm lazy. I mean 'if I had nothing else to do and remembered, I would download it. But Abby's album, I honestly went out of my way to look for. If you try that, you'll only find "Tri Me", which isn't even one of her better songs but I also feel you need the whole album, the whole package and one song alone doesn't really give you a good idea of Abby's talent.
So yeah, if you have the money, definitely shell out and buy this album. And even better still, if you have the money, pick me up a copy too.
