Seventeen years after their inception, "original DC ska/soul" outfit (as they describe themselves) the Pietasters, with founding members Steve Jackson (vocals) and Carlos Linares (trumpet), plus some new blood, have made their way back onto the scene with their latest studio album, All Day.
Complete with an offbeat ska rendition of Tom Petty's "Listen to Her Heart," All Day, their first album in five years, is chock full of infectious and energetic numbers that are a throwback to third wave ska ("Anj Girl"), doo-wop, 60s garage ("So Long"), soul, roots, dub ("Sketch Dub"), and reggae ("Dream of You") beats. The 8-piece act offers sweet guitar licks, leading keyboard refrains, and lofty horn lines at a steady, spunky pace that blends well with the low production value.
On the song "Keep on Lyin'," definitely All Day's best track, Jackson sings with a vintage, soulful drawl that's deep-rooted in 60s R&B, while cheery hand claps are set against ominous lyrics ("I know you run all around this town/But you keep on lyin'/I hate myself for still bein' around/But you keep on lyin'"). The peppery horn section and fun background vocals add particular spice to the track without being overbearing, but the abrupt end leaves you wanting more.
The Pietasters also throw in a few instrumentals that are easy to get lost in when listening to them. They're neat numbers that are built on a smart, carefree grove. Just like All Day – smart, carefree, and definitely easy to get lost in.
