King Virtue: No Pictures Please - Indie Music Review

The first two tracks of King Virtue's album represents an odd splay for the band, moving as they do from the crunchy and effective Black Mountain noise-pop of opener "Building Good Karma" to the creaky dub beats and tuneless goop of "Not Tonight." But you'll pardon a band that lists Dolly Parton, Duran Duran, Nirvana, and Missy Elliot as artists they "sound like."
Certainly that schizoid list (and there are many, many more on the band's MySpace page) has some merit when you are confounded by the constant gear shifts that are clearly King Virtue's M.O. Only the college-radio vocals really unite the tracks, which jump from country to Depeche Mode theatricality like there's nothing separating the two. It's a neat idea, but they'll need more time to work the connections with aplomb. As of right now, it's still just stuff that should be played in bar gigs—but I mean that in the best possible way.
