The key to Perfect Day, the album coming from Scranton, PA-based rockers OurAfter, is simplicity. "Karma," the first of nine single-word titled tracks, kicks off the album with a strong offering that displays everything the fivesome has to offer. Frontman John Phillips puts his haunting voice - think James Blunt with a serious edge - on display, along with a fast, aggressively entrancing rock beat. Without blowing their wad too soon, OurAfter spends the next few songs transitioning to a slow, moody ballads. "My hands remain so empty/ These days always fall short/ It's summer in my chest again/ It always seems to pour," Phillips laments over deep bass lines and heavy drums to create a full sound on "Rain." That easy, seamless transition between moods is a trait they share
As the tracks move on, its becomes apparent that the band uses an easy, stripped-down formula. Every piece of the puzzle supports the other - the music, the vocals, and the lyrics compliment one another to form a solid, cohesive sound. On the title track, "Perfect Day," they throw a snappy synthesizer into the mix, which lends to itself to an interesting mix of a tribute to their 80s brethren with a new twist on post-punk rock. "Just a perfect day/ Something always has to bring me down," Phillips throws some sarcasm in with his less-than-subtle lyrics - just another finger pointing toward simplicity that gives OurAfter a measure of success.
Overall, the album is a perfect first release for the unsigned quintet - it's solid and sure to build a foundation that will bring future releases to the top.
