Susan Barth: Wonderland - Indie Music Review

Susan Barth sounds like at least five other female vocalists. None of which come to mind immediatly though. So her sound is refreshing in that it's familiar in a sense you're like 'where have I heard this before? I know this....' but not in a 'HEY, she's blatantly ripping off _______!' sense.
The first track I should believe is the most powerful, to lure you in. Her first track is kind of lackluster though and I don't believe it does her justice really. It kind of just plods along, and can just be described as 'nice. Oh, that's nice.'
I LOVE the song 'Almost Did It'. It has more energy than all of the other tracks, in a Avril 'punk' vein meets radio friendly chick grunge. The subject matters more than tired though 'I'm a girl, you hurt me but I'm better than that' but the way it's presented isn't. This song alone, yeah, I'd steal it off the internet. I actually went and tried but FYI, there's nothing there so I guess you'll just have to pay for the cd. Me, I'd barter for it at least...
'Matters' is more of a poppy song, with her intial vocals in that damned digital enhanced thing I don't understand. She soon loses it though and the song gets sweet, in an actual sweet used properly sense not in a lame 'sweet!' slang sense. It's a slow, sweet, mellow song. If I still listened to Natalie Merchant, this song would be on the same playlist.
The next track (I really like Susan Barth so I'm actually listening to all her songs and commenting on them for you...) I sort of get a Dressy Bessy without the retro throwbackness feel. This song is hella catchy and has some great vocal hooks. If I went to my real job today, I could see this getting stuck in my head for most of the day.
Nothing stands out too much about the next song, 'Grammys' but that's not to say it's a bad song, per say. It just is more of a background noise while you're doing something else song.
The song after that, 'Waking Up' pretty much follows 'Grammys'. Same views apply except this one has a nice keyboard breakdown part but then a lame guitar part.
'So Tired of You' gets back to being pretty damned good. I was worried for a minute that the rest of the album would be as mediocre as the last two songs, but even if it was, I'd still like Susan for the first half of the album. But this song goes back to her trying to be tough attitude with catchy hooks. The songs more powerful, has more substance than the last two. It just sounds full. The ending is kind of abrupt here though. I thought the link was broken at first.
I guess it would be too much to expect an album to be amazing on EVERY track. 'After All' is kind of a flat but another 'sweet' track. The thing that these songs keeps reminding me (and I apologize for the shitty comparison) is if you've ever seen the movie 'Josie and the Pussycats', the one sweet, light song they do.
'Shes there' is kind of flat and lacking as much substance as a lot of the other great songs but somehow this one is still a good song. Another Dressy Bessy without the retroness feel. Or Sixpence None the Richer without the suck.
'Losing My Way' is another flat song but it's more lively than the other ones at least.
'It's Love' isn't enough of a powerful track to end the album on. It's another one of her sickenly sweet songs that just are kind of flat.
On the whole, this album is half awesome, half background noise. I'd recommend stealing it off the internet or maybe even picking it up if it's under $8.
