Jon Hardy & The Public: Working In Love - Music Review

I have a love and hate relationship with pop music. I love to hate it. It is easy to dislike – very easy to pick on and pick apart. It is all usually so damn generic. I like John Hardy and The Public though. They have that pop sound that lends itself to more of a rock style from the 50’s and 60’s that could be compared to Jerry Lee Lewis or the Beatles with some classic 70’s stuff thrown in there for good measure. You can hear it in the musical backing more than anything else with the lyrics helping out a bit. I can certainly see them dressing like Buddy Holly and performing at a sock hop. Is this a bad thing? To some it might be but not to me.
There are many great elements in the music including the whole throw back style. It adds color to a usually dull and trite musical genre that is pop music. In all fairness pop means “popular” – meaning the “in” music or whatever the current trend is. I’m sorry to tell John hardy and The Public that their music is not popular music. It hasn’t been popular in like two or three decades. Point is that the people who will like their music will be more refined. They will have a mature sense of what good music should sound like and I guarantee to them it will not sound like Myley Cyrus or I-Carly, no – it will sound like John Hardy and The Public – like a band that actually writes their own music and actually performs it live without backing tracks, lip syncing or poorly timed lead singer switch outs and most definitely no big bad of Disney money buying your soul.
And hey – they have a song about Ali – can’t be all wrong.
