Jackie Morris can be summed up as what I would call Mid Western Eastern Country Folk. I say this because Folk music tells a story, which Jackie does in all of her songs and as we all know Country music from the Mid West is vastly different than the stuff we find in the south – I usually just call it annoying. I like folk normally. I love James Taylor and I am Irish so therefore it’s nearly a give-in that I like Celtic music. Be it rock, punk, SKA or timeless folk classics.
Storytelling is a great key in Folk music and the title track, “Where the Legends Grow Like Weeds” is no different. It may have a long title but who cares? The music is simple, but rich in style and sound. Her vocals follow suit really giving you the sensation that she values it as an extension of herself and it carries the song which can easily be described as a take on Irish Folk.
Every song on this CD is a story unto itself. And each song seems to represent a certain style of music. The title track is reminiscent of Irish Folk. “Moth to a Flame” has a Spanish fluidity to it. “Trouble With a Wanted Man” is most notably my least favorite song as it’s really old school style country which I really can’t stand.
Musically the album is tight. The vocals aren’t far behind though they could be a little more contemporary instead of a Prairie Home Companion sort of feel of weird folk country music. There could also be more continuity in styles instead of jumping from World Folk to Spanish Dance to Old School Country then to Blues all of which makes me kind of feel like I’m listening to a Flea Market Performer who could be a whole lot more, but settles for the doldrums.
For me personally, based simply on the music and vocals and all that stuff, I’d have to give it a 7 out of 10. More continuity, stronger vocals and more up to date lyrics would sell this to me more. If you’re old – and like Glenn Miller or Prairie Home Companion then this would certainly be a 10 with a bullet.
