Call Me Alice: All Against 5ive - Music Review

I hate to say it but the vocals are clean, VERY clean and in fact sometimes TOO clean for the music. “Falling” is a great song albeit coming off as rushed when they could have slowed it down a beat, beat and a half and shave off 8 seconds from the final product. The chorus smokes and I found myself air drumming and singing. Definitely Rock Band worthy! It’s quite the catchy.
“Out of Sight” is a good song – I don’t quite the synth-pop undertones to the music or the piano intro. I love piano – but not in this song. Cut the intro – get right into it with the chorus then rock it mad tight.
I was prepared to not like songs like “System Backup” because the drum bass didn’t seem to gel with the rest – then we got some serious synthesizer use which can sometimes turn me. The message of the song won me over in the end though – preaching about technology ruining us from appreciating real beauty. Of course – I am writing this on a computer with a window 3 feet from me and I haven’t looked out of it yet. In any case – the beginning of the song reminded me of Cream’s “In The Garden of Good and Evil” then it kicked me in the nuts and became VERY pop hard rock and I got a twinge of the goosey bumps.
Several songs from the CD follow this same type of formula by combining clear vocals, great music with well placed synth and other in-studio effects and by melting several different genres together to form this fruit cake of delight it all just works. “Trust Me” is one such song.
I can’t like EVERYTHING unfortunately. “Electrical Jesus” is one such song. I like the chorus, but the rest is just a mismatch in all forms of the word.
Giving “Call Me Alice” some serious credit – the chick can wail! I love her vocals. They’re incredibly strong. Everything is strong. Sure – sometimes the songs sound a tad rushed, but music isn’t about perfection. Look at one of the most successful bands in history… The Ramones. Musically they were worse than most American Idol runner-up but they had it together in terms of depth, fun and market appeal. A female frontman gives any good, solid band great appeal. Especially if that band is tight and has an ability to reach out and grab other musical genres and incorporate them into the sound. “Call Me Alice” is one such band. I give a solid 8.5 out of 10. I didn’t care for the bonus tracks as they were really trying to, at least to me, be another Trent Reznor or Britney Spears. There were two remix tracks as well which I didn’t care for – but I think remixing is an overdone pop-diva/rap thing and is very over used.
