Democracy for NYC (DFNYC) and Central Brooklyn Independent Democrats (CBID) have endorsed Chris Owens in his quest to succeed Representative Major Owens (D-11th District).
Owens defeated David Yassky, a City Councilmember, by a large margin in both cases.
Democracy for NYC is an all-volunteer, non-profit political action committee. The organization is committed to ideals espoused by Democracy For America (DFA), which started as the Howard Dean campaign for President. DFNYC works to guarantee that fiscally responsible and socially progressive candidates win elections at all levels of government.
Owens received the highest percentage of votes cast for a candidate in DFNYC's history, a whopping 93%.
"Whether we talk about the debacle in Iraq, the horror of our healthcare system, the pain in our public schools, or the outrageous treatment of immigrants, strong leadership is needed in America, and DFNYC believes that I can provide that leadership," said Owens.
Based in Brooklyn's 44th and 52nd Assembly Districts, CBID was founded in 1968 and has been in the vanguard of progressive causes over the years. The organization engages in various political activities, including the collection of signatures on nominating petitions, in Park Slope, Windsor Terrace, Kensington, Ditmas Park, Brooklyn Heights and Borum Hill.
"I am honored to receive the support of CBID, an organization whose progressive pedigree and commitment to reform politics is unquestioned," said Owens adding, "This endorsement confirms that Chris Owens is the aggressive progressive in this Congressional race - and a progressive with strong grass-roots support."
