By Kelvin Watkins In 1979 Ohio, several youngsters (Elle Fanning, Joel Courtney, Gabriel Basso) are making a zombie movie with a Super-8 camera. In the midst of filming, the friends witness a horrifying train derailment and are lucky to escape with their lives. They soon discover that the catastrophe was no accident, as a series of unexplained events and disappearances soon follows. Deputy Jackson Lamb (Kyle Chandler), the father of one of the kids, searches for the terrifying truth behind the crash. Super 8 is a film that is reminiscent of Steven Spielberg’s earlier work like ET, Goonies, and Stand By Me. Truly he is in tune with his inner child and has the ability to bring out the best in young actors. But also know that this is not a film for the little kiddies either. It’s more like ET’s big brother, who was mistreated, locked away, escaped and is looking for some payback. Super 8 is violent but not overly gross with it. It’s funny, it’s sad, and it even tries to give us hope of being able to move on when we think life has dealt with us unfairly. Though, with who can only be considered Spielberg’s [...]

By Kelvin Watkins In the early 1960s, during the height of the Cold War, a mutant named Charles Xavier (James McAvoy) meets a fellow mutant named Erik Lehnsherr (Michael Fassbender). Despite their vastly different backgrounds — Charles grew up with a wealthy family, while Erik lost his parents at Auschwitz — the two become close friends. As the world teeters on the brink of a nuclear war, Charles and Erik with other mutants join forces to save humanity. However, a situation soon tears the friends apart. As an origin movie this film rocks, with the early days of Professor X, Magneto, and Mystique. This film is a wonderful addition to the X-Men franchise. Since the audience has already formed their opinions of these characters when they were first introduced in earlier films, Marvel had to take great care when making an origin film, which they seem to have mastered with this movie. The story line, the casting the acting and visual effects were as good as any of the earlier films There are some great cameos as well. You will see the birth of the X-Men as well as the beginning of the Brotherhood of Evil Mutants. Even if you [...]

By Kelvin Watkins Captain Jack Sparrow (Johnny Depp) finds himself on an unexpected journey to the fabled Fountain of Youth when a woman from his past (Penélope Cruz) forces him aboard the Queen Anne’s Revenge, the ship of the formidable pirate Blackbeard (Ian McShane). As a great fan of the first three Pirates of the Caribbean films I find that this one falls extremely short of its predecessors. The quest in the story (searching for the fountain of youth) was quite lame since most of the characters are not overly old. New characters were added to the genre but with little appeal. Clearly, Disney and Bruckheimer were looking to just cash in on the franchises past fame, and did not put in any real effort. Oh and the 3D effects felt like an after thought. But I guess that’s how all new movies will be filmed, so I better get uses to it. ————————— For More Information Visit: ————————— http://www.movieweb.com/movie/pirates-of-the-caribbean-on-stranger-tides http://disney.go.com/pirates http://www.facebook.com/PiratesoftheCaribbean http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1298650

By Kelvin Watkins This spring, producer Judd Apatow (Knocked Up, Superbad) and director Paul Feig (creator of Freaks and Geeks) invite you to experience Bridesmaids. Kristen Wiig leads the cast as Annie, a maid of honor whose life unravels as she leads her best friend, Lillian (Maya Rudolph), and a group of colorful bridesmaids (Rose Byrne, Melissa McCarthy, Wendi McLendon-Covey and Ellie Kemper) on a wild ride down the road to matrimony. Annie’s life is a mess. But when she finds out her lifetime best friend is engaged, she simply must serve as Lillian’s maid of honor. Though lovelorn and broke, Annie bluffs her way through the expensive and bizarre rituals. With one chance to get it perfect, she’ll show Lillian and her bridesmaids just how far you’ll go for someone you love. This film was hilarious from start to finish. Definitely not a “Chick Flick”. This is a movie for Guys and Gals alike. For me the character Megan (Melissa McCarthy of Mike & Molly) steals the show. Her raunchy antics will keep you laughing until you cry. Best comedy I have seen this year. ————————— For More Information: ————————— http://www.bridesmaidsmovie.com http://www.movieweb.com/movie/bridesmaids http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1478338/combined

By Kelvin Watkins WOW. Not 100% sure why I liked this film so much, but WOW. This film feels like it was made for me personally. It brings all of the things we geeks who played Dungeons & Dragons, Warzone, and Warhammer 40,000 to another level of reality, and put it up on the big screen. With its strong flavor of Japanese animation, cool visual effects and killer fusion of music into key scenes this film takes you for a ride. Not to say that the scantly clad stars with guns and swords didn’t add an additional appeal for me. But, I guess what is most profound with this over the top action fiick is that I left the theater and felt both sad and happy at the same time. The sadness came from looking at the story as a whole. This is a tragic tale full with bravery, and hope. The happiness comes from knowing that this movie was able to invoke an emotion from me. There have been so many other films that promise so much, but this one doesn’t promise it just delivers. I guess that’s where the “Sucker Punch” comes in. This film is not for [...]

By James Lane The only life they’ve known is war. The only loyalty they have is to each other. This is the main theme behind Liongate’s latest action flick “The Expendables” that brings together a powerhouse cast of action superstars consisting of Sylvester Stallone, Jason Statham, Jet Li, Dolph Lundgren, Randy Couture, Steve Austin, Terry Crews, Eric Roberts, Charisma Carpenter, Bruce Willis, and Arnold Schwarzenegger. This film is directed by Sylvester Stallone (“Rambo”, “Rocky Balboa”, “Staying Alive”) and co-written by Stallone and David Callaham (“Tell Tale”, “Horsemen”, “Doom”). Based on a story by David Callaham, “The Expendables” is about a group of mercenaries hired to take on what appears to be a routine assignment: a covert, CIA-funded operation to infiltrate a South American country and overthrow its ruthless dictator. Once the mission begins, the men realize things aren’t quite as they appear, finding themselves caught in a dangerous web of deceit and betrayal. With their mission thwarted and an innocent life in danger, the men struggle with an even tougher challenge one that threatens to destroy this band of brothers. With a runtime of about 100 minutes “The Expendables” unfortunately focuses more on over-the-top rapid fire gun violence, car chases, [...]

By Bethany Joy Burr Let’s cut the bullshit: This isn’t a good movie. More relevant, however, is that no one expects it to be. It neither achieves nor attempts the drama of Citizen Kane. No one goes in hoping to see the quirks of Fargo and no one reading this expects to hear it’s the modern-day Casablanca. If you’re reading this, you are in one of three categories: the hater who looks for and relishes any further depravation of the saga, the twi-hard hoping the movie equally captures the essence of Edward and the plot of the book, or a neutral third party who just wants to know if it’s good enough to drop ten bucks and two hours for on a Friday night. In this case, the most important thing you need to know is that it’s the better than the first two films in the series. Now, let’s break it down so everyone gets what they want. For the haters: You’ve guessed it—this isn’t a movie for true cinemaphiles. Line delivery is lack-luster. Combat choreography looks too much like its lyrical relative. Narrative is melodramatic at most. Yes, cheesy badass music cues when Taylor Lautner first appears on [...]

By Aaron Sanchez I’m just going to go out and say it: The A-Team is the best movie of the summer—thus far. Now, I might lose all critic credibility, but considering I didn’t have much to begin with, I’m willing to take the risk. Not to mention, if I had a dollar for every time I heard someone say, “critics always hate the good movies and like the boring ones”, I’d have enough money to pay off my film school loans, but I digress. Back to what I was saying, the A-Team is the best movie I’ve seen this summer. Before I get deep into A’s shallow story-line and thin characters, I need to take a moment and clarify what makes a good summer movie. Independence Day, Jurassic Park, Pirates of the Caribbean, Spiderman, Lord of the Rings, and most recently, The Dark Knight all come to mind when I think of great summer movies. A summer movie is like a soda, full of things we know are bad for us, yet great with popcorn. They’re big and loud, silly and often predictable. But if done right, they are some of the most entertaining and endearing films we as an [...]

By Aaron Sanchez In The Losers, the bullets fly just as fast as the punch lines. So if you’re in to action movies, it’s definitely a winner. That being said, if you’re looking for a sound plot, interesting characters, decent acting, and editing that won’t make you dizzy, you might want to look elsewhere. The Losers is one of those films that knows exactly what it is and doesn’t strive to be anything more, lets it all hang out and just has fun. We meet The Losers, a Special Forces unit, on a mission in Bolivia. The team of misfits is lead by Colonel Clay played effortlessly by Jeffery Dean Morgan. If he looks vaguely familiar, it’s because he played The Comedian in Watchmen, which was about the only good thing in Watchmen (but that’s a whole other review altogether). The rest of his team consists of a few recognizable faces including Chris Evens from Fantastic Four and Idris Elba from HBO’s The Wire. Overall, the Losers get along smashingly, which is the strength of the movie. With exception to Colonel Clay and his right hand man, Roque, the rest of the team bicker and crack jokes, leaving you laughing [...]
