Easy-to-use publishing format guards copyrights, Aims to change the market for digital comics Helsinki, Finland – Epuuk, a supplier of digital comics for mobile devices and browsers, has launched its service in Finland and is set to expand to other geographies. The service guards copyrights and brings a new model of distribution for digital content. Epuuk is currently in the public beta phase and features content mostly in Finnish. The current selection varies from well-known international titles to Finnish indie comics, with more comics in the English language to come. “Digital music became wide-spread on pirates’ terms, and damages done by illegal distribution have proven difficult to fix”, said Jarmo Kylmämaa, Managing Director of Epuuk. “Like record collections before, book collections are now going through a phase of digitalization and book publishers must move quickly to keep the development on track from the start. Our aim is to create a digital platform that serves the interests of readers, comic artists and publishers alike.” Epuuk features both individual comic strips and whole comic albums. Comics bought from the service are saved in the user’s own digital comic shelf, where they can be read anytime and anywhere with a mobile device or [...]

Facebook is expected to announce that it has reached the 500 million user mark this week. That’s half a billion people in just six years. It seems like only yesterday Facebook was a students-only site birthed from a Harvard University dorm room. Now it’s the most visited site on the Internet and a multibillion-dollar empire. Putting the half-billion-member-mark in perspective, The Washington Post reports that “the population inhabiting Facebook now equals that of the United States, Japan and Germany combined. Or, two Mexicos and a Brazil.” In an interview with All Things Digital, Randi Zuckerberg, Facebook’s marketing director, said that the site plans to celebrate its milestone with “Facebook Stories,” a collection of real-life blurbs from Facebook users about how the social networking site has impacted their lives. “As we anticipated our 500-million milestone, and we wanted to find a different way to announce and celebrate it. In the past, it’s been all about the numbers and milestones, and we realized we had never taken the opportunity to celebrate users,” Zuckerberg said. Users are encouraged to visit the User Stories page to submit their yarn in 420 characters or less. The stories will then be organized by geographical location and [...]

You already know the basics of internet security, right? You know to keep your antivirus program and patches up to date, to be careful where you go on the Internet, and to exercise online street-smarts to resist being tricked into visiting a phishing site or downloading a Trojan horse. But when you’ve got the basics covered, but you still don’t feel secure, what can you do? Here are a few advanced security tips to help you thwart some of today’s most common attacks. Remember, however, that security is all about trade-offs. With most of these tips, what you gain in security, you lose in convenience. But hey, it’s your computer. Be as paranoid as you want to be. Avoid Scripting This may be the one piece of advice that will do most to keep you the safe on the Web: Steer clear of JavaScript, especially on sites you don’t trust. JavaScript is very popular, and for good reason. It works in almost all browsers, and it makes the Web a lot more dynamic. But it also enables bad guys to trick your browser more easily into doing something that it shouldn’t. The deception could be something as simple as telling [...]

Apple CEO Steve Jobs says all iPhone users will receive a free case to help alleviate reception issues with their popular smartphones. For users still unsatisfied with the fix, Jobs says they have until September 30 to return the phone for a full refund. “We’re not perfect, and phones aren’t perfect either, but we want to make all of our users happy,” Apple CEO Steve Jobs said. Friday’s announcement follows a recent Consumer Reports blog post in which they said they could not recommend the iPhone 4 because of problems with the antenna located on the bottom left of the device. The return rate for iPhone 4 is 1.7%, compared to 6% for its predecessor the 3GS, Jobs said. Only 0.55% of iPhone 4 owners have called in about reception issues, he said. Jobs also said the reception issues aren’t unique to iPhone 4, using the BlackBerry Bold 9700 and HTC Droid Eris as examples of other smartphones that experience significant drops in signal strength when held a certain way.

CUPERTINO, California — Apple CEO Steve Jobs kicked off a press conference Friday at his company’s headquarters with an unusual admission of fallibility. “We’re not perfect. We know that. You know that. And [our] phones aren’t perfect either,” Jobs told the assembled crowd of about 90 journalists and bloggers, addressing widely-reported problems with the iPhone 4’s antenna. “We’ve been working our butts off to understand what the real problems are,” Jobs added, referring to the problem as “Antennagate.” Negative press about the iPhone 4 spiraled out of control after Consumer Reports said it could not recommend the device because of its faulty antenna. A recall is extremely unlikely — and surely something Apple wants to avoid, given the costs and potential damage to its brand. (For an idea of what it could be like, take a look at five of the most brutal product recalls in recent history.) When the iPhone 4 hit stores June 24, numerous anecdotal reports spread across the web with customers claiming that covering the lower-left gap of the phone caused a significant drop in reception, as signified by cellular bars. In a letter to customers, Apple said the reception loss was an optical illusion caused [...]

Apple said that it planned to hold a news conference on Friday to discuss the iPhone 4 as concerns about problems with the device’s antenna continued to mount. Steve Dowling, a spokesman for Apple, would not give details of who would speak at the event, which is expected to be held at the company’s headquarters in Cupertino, Calif. The iPhone 4 has been Apple’s most successful product introduction to date. Yet problems with the antenna surfaced after the phone went on sale and have plagued Apple for weeks. Apple sought to address those concerns nearly two weeks ago, saying that a software bug caused the iPhone 4 and its predecessors to display signal strength incorrectly. But Consumer Reports on Monday called into question Apple’s explanation. The magazine said that it had tested the iPhone 4 along with other devices in a lab and determined that the iPhone 4 had a hardware design flaw. It said that it could not recommend the device to its readers until Apple fixed the problem. Analysts have said in recent days that a recall of the iPhone 4 is highly unlikely. But some have speculated that the company might decide to offer free bumpers, which [...]

Ebay has been slapped with a massive patent suit which could cost it at least $3.8 billion. XPRT Ventures of Connecticut said it shared the six patents – which cover online payment systems including PayPal – with eBay in confidence. The IPR holding company claims that eBay used this proprietary information to modify and incorporate PayPal into its e-commerce platform and to roll out several features incorporated into eBay’s payment systems. These include PayPal Pay Later, PayPal Buyer Credit, PayPal’s Balance Manager Service and the Checkout payment system. And XPRT claims that eBay not only infringed its patents, but then added insult to injury by filing patents for the technology itself, one named ‘Method and System to Automate Payment for a Commerce Transaction’ and filed in April 2003. But the patent applications were refused four times because of XPRT’s prior patents – which proves, XPRT says, that eBay not only knew the technology was XPRT’s, but that it was patentable. “According to the complaint, although eBay knew of the confidential and proprietary nature of the Inventors’ disclosures, eBay nevertheless filed a US patent application, using the same attorney who had reviewed XPRT’s disclosures, which incorporated numerous disclosures set forth in XPRT’s [...]

If you were a great big movie studio getting ready to release a major motion picture about the early days of Facebook, where would you advertise? You might want to try MySpace–or Twitter. But Facebook? Of course not. According to Sony SVP Steve Elzer, Facebook’s guidelines prohibit the new David Fincher-helmed The Social Network from advertising on that site. “Facebook’s advertising guidelines don’t allow ads to reference the company unless Facebook has cooperated with the object of the ad. So, we won’t be advertising there given these parameters,” Elzer said. The fact that none of the controlling forces behind Facebook have played a role in the movie (and are likely not really looking forward to its release–co-founder Mark Zuckerberg, especially) certainly doesn’t help much.

Romero, the undisputed master of horror cinema (“Night of the Living Dead”, “Dawn of the Dead”, “Creepshow”, “Monkey Shines”, “Diary of the Dead”), partnered with Peter Grunwald, Artfire Films’ Art Spigel, and Ara Katz, to develop APP of the DEAD, available now for Apple iPhone and iPod Touch for $1.99. “Given the amount of zombies I’ve brought to life, I figured everyone should be able to do the same,” said George A. Romero. Developed in coordination with Romero’s latest feature, George A. Romero’s Survival of the Dead, APP of the DEAD casts iPhone and iPod Touch owners as the director, allowing you to turn your friends and family into horrific zombies with over 20 zombie features, including galleries of open wounds, deformed eyes and mouths.
