By James Lane Most people are fortunate to have just one remarkable talent, but Benjamin Utecht is not like most people. One of the proudest moments of Utecht’s life came when the clock ran out at that fateful Super Bowl Championship game where he and his teammates in the Indianapolis Colts claimed a hard-fought victory over the Chicago Bears. His injuries (including a career-ending concussion) have since forced him into retirement from football, but his love of music and impressive vocal ability has helped to launch his childhood dream of a successful singing career. While it has traditionally been difficult for athletes to crossover into the music world, the truth is that Utecht has been preparing for this transition for the past twenty years. Thus far, the passionate superstar’s astonishing voice has been featured alongside legendary pops maestro Erich Kunzel and the Cincinnati Pops Orchestra, the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra, and gospel music legends Bill Gaither and Sandi Patty. Benjamin’s classical crossover style strikes a resemblance to Josh Groban and Michael Buble, but with the pop/rock appeal of U2 and the epic nature of cinematic scores. Utecht’s latest accomplishment was being named Jim Brickman’s lead male vocalist on the multi-platinum artists’ [...]

By James Lane Agents for Serena Williams confirmed Wednesday that she was diagnosed with a pulmonary embolism last week and later needed treatment for a hematoma. The 13-time Grand Slam champion hasn’t played a match since winning Wimbledon last July after cutting her right foot on broken glass at a restaurant shortly after winning her fourth Wimbledon title. Her latest health problems have been “extremely hard, scary and disappointing,” Williams, 29, said in a prepared statement. “I am doing better. I’m at home now and working with my doctors to keep everything under control. I know I will be OK but am praying and hoping this will all be behind me soon. “While I can’t make any promises now on my return, I hope to be back by early summer. That said, my main goal is to make sure I get there safely.” People magazine first reported on Williams’ condition, quoting spokeswoman Nicole Chabot as saying Williams underwent “emergency treatment” Monday for a hematoma suffered as a result of treatment for “a more critical situation,” the pulmonary embolism. Mark Adelman, chief of vascular surgery at New York University Langone Medical Center, said a patient with a pulmonary embolism would need [...]

The NFL is investigating the explicit video of Patriots linebacker Brandon Spikes that was leaked onto the Internet, apparently to determine whether Spikes violated the league’s personal conduct policy. “We are looking into it,” NFL spokesman Greg Aiello told the Boston Herald. At first we were left with questions whether it was in fact Spikes engaging in sexual acts with another woman in the video, but Spikes’ agent, Terry Watson, has since come forward to apologize on his client’s behalf and called it an “embarrassing situation.” “It was something that occurred before he became an NFL draftee and a New England Patriot. I think for anyone it would be an embarrassing situation,” Watson told ESPNBoston.com. “Brandon has shown to many people the kind of person he is before and after being drafted in the second round. He’s hoping to put this behind him and looks forward to having a great football season.” Spikes, a second-round draft pick out of the University of Florida, became subject to the policy once he was selected in the NFL Draft. Assuming it’s true that the video was recorded off chatroulette while Spikes was still in college, it would be pretty ridiculous to dock him [...]

More than two years after Roger Clemens told Congress that he had never taken steroids or human growth hormone, the seven-time Cy Young Award winner reaffirmed his denial Monday as he pleaded not guilty in federal court to charges that he lied to a congressional panel about the alleged doping. The indictment does not offer specific proof that Clemens ever used the banned drugs, but alleges that he lied to Congress when he rejected the claims of others who said he had used the substances. Those claims grew from a 2007 report on doping in baseball that alleged that Clemens had “used anabolic steroids on multiple occasions in 1998, 2000 and 2001, and HGH on multiple occasions in 2000.” A status hearing on the defense’s review of the evidence was set for Dec. 8, with a preliminary hearing on the case scheduled for March 28. The former pitcher, who last played in 2007, has publicly denied the allegations ever since release of the report, which was commissioned by Major League Baseball and conducted by former U.S. Sen. George Mitchell (D-Maine). The allegations in the report were based largely on statements from Clemens’ former trainer, Brian McNamee, who cooperated with investigators [...]

Seven-time Cy Young award winner Roger Clemens arrived Monday in the nation’s capital to face charges of lying to Congress about whether he used steroids or human growth hormone. Clemens showed up early at a federal courthouse just a few blocks from the U.S. Capitol. The 48-year-old ex-major leaguer was being arraigned later Monday on three counts of making false statements, two counts of perjury and one count of obstruction of Congress. Clemens is expected to only be in Washington for a short time. The New York Daily News reports that Clemens and his wife, Debbie, planned to play in the Golf.com World Amateur Handicap Championship in the Myrtle Beach, S.C., area later Monday. In what should be a short court appearance, Clemens will stand before U.S. District Judge Reggie Walton. If convicted on all charges, he could face up to 30 years in prison and a $1.5 million fine, though under U.S. sentencing guidelines, he would probably face no more than 15 to 21 months in prison. All signs point toward him fighting. He came to Congress after being mentioned repeatedly in the Mitchell Report — the damning breakdown of the sport’s steroid problem released in 2007. In front [...]

The Minnesota Vikings acquired Miami Dolphins wide receiver Greg Camarillo in a trade for cornerback Benny Sapp. The trade was confirmed by Camarillo’s agent in a text to ESPN.com’s Tim Graham and by Sapp’s agent in a post to Twitter. “In the NFL, you have to be ready for trades at any time,” Camarillo’s agent, J.R. Rickert wrote in a text. “This is a great opportunity for Greg to play with one of the best quarterbacks ever.” When asked for comment about the trade, Camarillo told ESPN 760 in West Palm Beach, Fla.: “Yeah, it’s crazy. I hate to be rude but I don’t have time for interviews. I have to move my whole life.” Camarillo was acquired to fill the receiving void created by Sidney Rice’s hip surgery that will sideline him until midseason and the migraine problem affecting Percy Harvin. Sapp wasn’t present as the Vikings hit the practice field Wednesday morning. His agent, Andy Simms, confirmed on his Twitter account that Sapp had been traded to the Dolphins. The 28-year-old Camarillo caught 105 passes over the past two seasons for the Dolphins. He works effectively out of the slot. Camarillo became a Dolphins fan favorite in December [...]

The Boston news media and Red Sox fans are treating Johnny Damon as expected after the Tigers outfielder/DH nixed a deal to bring him back to Fenway Park. “Johnny Rotten” is the headline on one blog. Columnists are calling him an idiot, but not in the endearing way the label was born during the Red Sox’s run to the 2004 World Series title. From Michael Silverman in the Boston Herald: Leave it to the original Idiot to make a decision that left nearly everyone in baseball scratching their heads. The allure of spending the rest of his summer in Detroit proved irresistible to Johnny Damon. Or Dan Shaugnessy in the Boston Globe: So it’s official: He really is an idiot. I say this with no malice and all due respect. “Idiot,” you must remember, was the title of Johnny Damon’s 2005 best-selling autobiography. … In Johnny’s world, “idiot” is a term of endearment. That said, his decision to stay with the Tigers is downright idiotic … or there is some larger force at work. It seems pretty simple. Damon says he did not like the way things went down in the year after the World Series title and when he [...]

Minnesota Vikings wide receiver Sidney Rice will likely miss at least half the season after he had surgery on his injured hip on Monday, the Star Tribune reports. Judd Zulgadd, the Vikings beat reporter with the Star Tribune, tweeted Tuesday morning that Rice confirmed he had hip surgery. Rice had his hip worked on at the Steadman Clinic in Vail, Colo., on Monday. Details of Rice’s hip injury are unclear, but what is known is that two specialists suggested Rice have surgery in the offseason and he elected not to go through with the procedure, the Star Tribune reports. Rice, a second-round pick by the Vikings in 2007, suffered the injury in Minnesota’s NFC Championship loss to New Orleans in January. Rice has been on the physically unable to perform list since training camp opened. Last season, Rice caught a team-leading 83 passes for 1,312 yards and eight touchdowns and was named to the Pro Bowl.

Attornys for Tiger Woods and Elin Nordegren Woods have announced that the couple have divorced, confirming rumors that have swirled for most of 2010. “We are sad that our marriage is over and we wish each other the very best for the future,” the couple said in a joint statement that leaves zero doubt as to where their future concerns will lie. “While we are no longer married, we are the parents of two wonderful children and their happiness has been, and will always be, of paramount importance to both of us.” Terms of the divorce were not disclosed, but it’s likely that Elin Woods will receive a handsome financial incentive in return for her silence. Chances are it won’t approach the outlandish $750 million figure bandied about earlier this year, but once you get into 9 figures, does that first digit even matter? Today’s news closes a chapter on a story that began last Thanksgiving, when news of woods infidelities came to light. A simple one-car accident kicked off a story that alternately fascinated, disgusted and amused fans worldwide. Woods took time off from the game, spent time in a treatment facility for sex addiction, endured scathing criticism and [...]
