By James Lane This is not a joke. Roseanne Barr is a longtime supporter of the Green Party and looks forward to working with people who share her values. She said the two major parties aren’t serving the American people. “The Democrats and Republicans have proven that they are servants — bought and paid for by the 1% — who are not doing what’s in the best interest of the American people,” Barr said. Occupy Wall Street protesters popularized the “We are the 99 percent” slogan in their fight against economic disparity and perceived corporate greed. Barr has submitted paperwork to the Green Party for her candidacy. The party’s presidential nominee will be selected at a convention in Baltimore in July. Barr said she has been fighting for working-class families and women for decades. “I will barnstorm American living rooms,” she said in a candidate questionnaire submitted to the Green Party. “Mainstream media will be unable to ignore me, but more importantly they will be unable to overlook the needs of average Americans in the run-up to the 2012 election.” ————————— For More Information Visit: ————————— http://www.roseanneworld.com

By James Lane President Obama’s energy policy shows a dangerous disconnect from the real nature of the current energy crisis, said Green Party candidates and leaders, who promoted the “Green New Deal” as a way to alleviate impending climate change and create millions of new jobs (http://www.greenpartywatch.org/2010/08/11/62-green-candidates-endorse-green-new-deal). Jill Stein, candidate for the Green Party’s 2012 presidential nomination (http://www.jillstein.org): “With his State of the Union speech, President Obama has adopted the ‘Drill, Baby, Drill’ platform of the Republican Party. He has embraced the energy industry position that our public lands and our environment should be sacrificed for the goal of increasing domestic production. This spin ignores the fact that our most pressing problem isn’t foreign oil — it’s what fossil fuels, both foreign and domestic, are doing to our planet. The President’s ‘all of the above’ approach is an alarming denial of the climate emergency we face and the urgent need to substantially reduce the amount of carbon we exhaust into the atmosphere. Our nation and human society around the world are already at serious risk for devastating climate disruption. Obama’s proposals make this risk even worse. With the President’s support of the oil company agenda, the Green Party now emerges [...]

By James Lane On January 18, 2012, in an unprecedented decision, the Wikipedia community has chosen to blackout the English version of Wikipedia for 24 hours, in protest against proposed legislation in the United States — the Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA) in the U.S. House of Representatives, and PROTECTIP (PIPA) in the U.S. Senate. If passed, this legislation will harm the free and open Internet and bring about new tools for censorship of international websites inside the United States. Wikipedia administrators confirmed this decision Monday afternoon (PST) in a public statement (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:SOPA_initiative/Action#Summary_and_conclusion): Over the course of the past 72 hours, over 1800 Wikipedians have joined together to discuss proposed actions that the community might wish to take against SOPA and PIPA. This is by far the largest level of participation in a community discussion ever seen on Wikipedia, which illustrates the level of concern that Wikipedians feel about this proposed legislation. The overwhelming majority of participants support community action to encourage greater public action in response to these two bills. Of the proposals considered by Wikipedians, those that would result in a “blackout” of the English Wikipedia, in concert with similar blackouts on other websites opposed to SOPA and [...]

Green Party leaders called for strong national condemnation of the brutal actions of police forces in their treatment of Occupy Movement protesters in several cities. “We encourage political leaders, beginning with President Obama, to express revulsion and anger at the violent and destructive behavior of police in their handling of nonviolent protesters, and to take whatever action they can to prevent such brutality. We urge all Americans to understand that police forces that use military tactics and are unaccountable for their actions represent a threat to our freedoms,” said Howie Hawkins, co-chair of the Green Party of New York State. Greens cited the use of pepper-spray, tear gas, batons, and other weapons, as well as violent manhandling, handcuffs locked tight enough to cause nerve damage, and other tactics that inflict severe pain and injury on peaceful protesters. Incidents like the use of pepper-spray on the faces of sitting protesters by police at the University of California, Davis constitute torture and deserve aggressive investigation and prosecution, said Green leaders. Greens also called for a probe of the alleged role of the FBI and Homeland Security Department in the suppression of protest, which if may implicate the Obama Administration in the police [...]

By James Lane Last night police fired tear gas into a crowd of several hundred protesters backing the Occupy movement who unsuccessfully tried to retake an encampment outside Oakland City Hall that officers had cleared away more than 12 hours earlier. Police gave repeated warnings to protesters to disperse from the entrance to Frank Ogawa Plaza at 14th Street and Broadway before firing several tear gas canisters into the crowd at about 7:45 p.m. Police had announced over a loudspeaker that those who refused to leave could be targeted by “chemical agents.” Protesters scattered in both directions on Broadway as the tear gas canisters and several flash-bang grenades went off. Regrouping, protesters tried to help one another and offered each other eye drops. One wounded woman, who others said had been hit by one of the canisters, was carried away by two protesters. Police forcibly dispersed the crowd with tear gas again about 9:30 p.m., when protesters began throwing objects at them. As protesters scattered, police closed off Broadway between 13th and 16th streets. Minutes later, protesters regrouped at the 15th Street entrance to the plaza. Protesters began throwing objects again. Police responded by firing more tear gas canisters. The [...]

By James Lane Calls for Green New Deal to End Unemployment, Defend Main Street from Wall Street, and Make Health Care a Human Right Jill Stein, a physician and former Massachusetts gubernatorial candidate, announced today she is running for President of the United States to provide an alternative to the “Wall Street parties” on issues such as jobs, universal health care, peace and climate change. She is seeking the nomination of the Green Party of the United States. Speaking to a gathering at the historic State House in Boston, Stein declared that voters have lost confidence in the Democratic and Republican leaders who have given the nation “massive bailouts for Wall Street, layoffs on Main Street, declining wages for workers, wars for oil abroad, and attacks on Medicare and Social Security.” She further noted that “They’re privatizing education, rolling back civil liberties and racial justice, plundering the environment, and driving us towards the calamity of climate change.” According to Stein “we need people in Washington who refuse to be bought by lobbyist money and for whom change is not just a slogan.” The centerpiece of Stein’s Green New Deal is a commitment to “end unemployment in America” by direct Federal [...]

By James Lane Filmmaker Craig Rosebraugh Pursues Trail of Environmental Destruction, Illness and Death Perfectly Timed to Reflect the Voices of the Global Occupy Wall Street Movement What happens when an industry has too much power? “Greedy Lying Bastards” presents a searing indictment of the influence, deceit and corruption that defines the fossil fuel industry. Filmmaker and political activist Craig Rosebraugh documents the impact of an industry that puts profits before people, wages a campaign of lies to thwart measures to combat climate change, uses its clout to minimize infringing regulations and undermined the political process in the U.S. and abroad. Rosebraugh’s in-depth investigation into the industry took him to the U.S., Tuvalu, Peru, England, Uganda, Kenya, Belgium, Denmark and Germany. “Greedy Lying Bastards” is the disturbing portrait of what he uncovered on his journey. By interweaving the stories of the victims of the Gulf oil spill and the global climate crisis, he lays bare the industry’s deliberate pattern of irresponsibility. And, while oil companies worldwide exert influence over policies that will protect their revenues, those who speak out against the industry’s reckless practices risk their livelihoods, and in some instances, their lives. The 2010 tragedy of Deepwater Horizon that [...]

By James Lane Over 3,000 people gathered at Liberty Plaza in the pre-dawn hours yesterday morning to defend the peaceful Occupation near Wall Street. The crowd cheered at the news that multinational real estate firm Brookfield Properties will postpone its so-called “cleanup” of the park and that Mayor Bloomberg has told the NYPD to stand down on orders to remove protesters. On the eve of the October 15 global day of action against Wall Street greed, this development has emboldened the movement and sent a clear message that the power of the people has prevailed against Wall Street. “We are winning and Wall Street is afraid,” said Kira Moyer-Sims, a protester from Portland, Oregon. “This movement is gaining momentum and is too big to fail.” “Brookfield Properties is the 1%. They have invested $24 billion in mortgage-backed securities, so as millions face foreclosure and eviction due to predatory lending and the burst of the housing bubble that Wall Street created, its not surprising they threatened to evict Occupy Wall Street,” said Patrick Bruner, an organizer with Occupy Wall Street from the Bed-Stuy neighborhood of Brooklyn. “But Brookfield and Bloomberg have backed down and our movement is only growing as the [...]

By James Lane At 1:30 this morning hundreds of police in full riot gear brutally attacked Occupy Boston, which had peacefully gathered on the Rose Kennedy Greenway. The Boston Police Department made no distinction between protesters, medics, or legal observers, arresting legal observer Urszula Masny-Latos, who serves as the Executive Director for the National Lawyers Guild, as well as four medics attempting to care for the injured. Earlier in the day, an estimated ten thousand union members, students, veterans, families, men, and women of all ages marched from the Boston Common to Dewey Square, and then to the North Washington Bridge to demand economic reform on Wall Street and the end of special interest influence in Washington. Following this massive outpouring of public support, dozens of police vans descended on the Greenway, with batons drawn, assaulting protesters and arresting more than one-hundred people. Members of Veterans for Peace carrying American flags were pushed to the ground and their flags trampled as the police hauled them away. Following the raid, Boston Police Commissioner Ed Davis made no mention of veterans, organized labor, students, or families, nor did he issue an apology for his department’s aggressive tactics. Since the beginning of its [...]
