By James Lane Juice Industry States Apple Juice is Safe: The Dr. Oz Show is Needlessly Concerning Consumers with Information Based on Improper Test Methods The Juice Products Association (JPA), the trade organization representing the juice products industry, says reports about arsenic in apple juice on the Dr. Oz Show are misleading. According to the JPA, the Dr. Oz Show may needlessly cause concern among consumers because the program fails to explain that arsenic is in the soil, water and air and therefore it is found in very low, harmless levels in many naturally sourced foods and beverages. “The results of tests for arsenic in apple juice that were shared by the Dr. Oz Show with the Juice Products Association should not be interpreted as fact,” said Gail Charnley, Ph.D., a toxicologist for JPA. “Subsequent FDA testing of the same lots of juice from one of the named brands, using the appropriate method for testing arsenic levels in juice, found significantly lower levels of arsenic, all well under any FDA level of concern.” The FDA has established what it calls a “level of concern” at 23 parts per billion (ppb) for the presence of inorganic arsenic in apple juice. Two [...]

Smoking cannabis from a pipe can significantly reduce chronic pain in patients with damaged nerves, a study suggests. A small study of 23 people also showed improvements with sleep and anxiety. Writing in the Canadian Medical Association Journal, the researchers said larger studies using inhaler-type devices for cannabis were needed. UK experts said the pain relief seen was small but potentially important, and more investigation was warranted. Around 1 to 2% of people have chronic neuropathic pain – pain due to problems with signalling between nerves – but effective treatments are lacking. Some patients with this type of chronic pain say smoking cannabis helps with their symptoms. And researchers have been investigating whether taking cannabinoids – the chemicals within cannabis that effect pain – in pill form could have the same effect. But the team from McGill University in Montreal said clinical trials on smoked cannabis were lacking. The study used three different potencies of cannabis – containing 2.5%, 6% and 9.4% of the active ingredient tetrahydrocannabinol – as well as a placebo (dummy version). Under nurse supervision, participants inhaled a single 25mg dose through a pipe three times a day for five days followed by nine days off, for [...]

WASHINGTON — The outbreak of salmonella in eggs is energizing efforts to pass a long-stalled food-safety bill that could prevent or mitigate such problems, according to federal officials, congressional supporters and independent experts. The bill, designed to overhaul a fractured food-safety system that hasn’t been updated in decades, would expand federal regulators’ powers to police food manufacturers. The House passed a version in 2009, but the legislation has stalled in the Senate, despite bipartisan support. Among other things, the legislation would require more frequent government inspections of food manufacturing facilities and the creation of stronger mechanisms for tracing food-borne illness outbreaks back to their source. The bill also would give the Food and Drug Administration authority to order recalls of food that may be tainted with salmonella, E. coli O157:H7 and other contaminants. “The pending legislation is absolutely critical,” Jeff Farrar, associate FDA commissioner for food protection, said in a call with reporters. “There are just numerous important measures in that bill that will give us new authorities and resources. ” About 550 million eggs have been recalled in the salmonella outbreak, which federal investigators have linked to two Iowa production facilities: Wright County Egg and Hillandale Farms. The Centers for [...]

VINEYARD HAVEN, Mass. — The White House says federally funded stem cell research should continue and is exploring how to respond to a judge’s order halting it. President Barack Obama, who last year ordered stem cell research expanded, “thinks that we need to do research, he put forward stringent ethical guidelines and he thinks that his policy’s the right one,” Deputy Press Secretary Bill Burton told reporters Tuesday. Burton said the administration was exploring all possible avenues “to make sure that we can continue to do this critical lifesaving research” after a federal judge Monday ruled Obama’s policy on stem cells illegal. He issued an injunction that temporarily blocks government rules expanding stem cell research. Asked if it might take new legislation from Congress to counter the ruling from U.S. District Judge Royce Lamberth, Burton said all possibilities were being explored. In his ruling, Lamberth concluded that federally funded stem cell research violated the will of Congress, which has prohibited federal funding for research in which a human embryo is destroyed. President George W. Bush had allowed federally funded research on 21 existing stem cell lines. Obama expanded – up to 75 so far – the number of stem cell [...]

WASHINGTON — A massive recall of eggs possibly tainted with salmonella bacteria is now at more than half-a-billion and could grow, the top US food safety official said Monday. “It is the largest egg recall that we’ve had in recent history,” Margaret Hamburg, head of the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA), told NBC television. “We may see some additional recalls over the next couple days, even weeks, as we better understand the network of distribution of these eggs contaminated,” she said. Hamburg added that US officials were “continuing to investigate aggressively to determine the exact source of the contamination as we move forward with the recall.” There are no known salmonella deaths due to the eggs, but health officials said the outbreak has sickened hundreds of people across the United States. The recalls affect two chicken egg processors — Hillandale Farms and Wright County Eggs, both in the midwestern state of Iowa — and cover at least 14 US states, from California to Arkansas. The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has warned that the outbreak could actually be larger than reported, because most people who get sick from salmonella do not seek medical treatment. The FDA [...]

While the severity of their needs has not yet been fully assessed, the number is greater than those who were affected by the 2005 South Asia tsunami (5 million), the 2005 South Asia earthquake (3 million), or the 2010 Haiti earthquake (3 million). The estimate of 290,000 homes destroyed or seriously damaged is almost the same as those destroyed in Haiti.
Up to 1.5 million flood victims in Pakistan were being treated for a variety of ailments and conditions, including acute respiratory infections, diarrhea and skin infections, according to Maurizio Giuliano with the U.N. Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs. Prime Minister Yousaf Raza Gilani has called a Tuesday meeting of senior Pakistani health officials, local officials, U.N. agencies and other international group to look into the emerging health crisis, state-run TV reported. The World Health Organization announced Sunday that cases of acute diarrhea have topped 204,000. The number of skin diseases — such as scabies — has topped 263,300. More than 204,600 Pakistanis have reported acute respiratory infections as filthy waters surround homeless flood victims, WHO said. Thousands have cases of suspected malaria. “Strong water and sanitation interventions, such as providing clean drinking water supply and addressing environmental hazards, are urgently needed to prevent outbreaks of waterborne diseases in” Charsadda, Nowshera and Peshawar, WHO said. Meanwhile, the half-million residents of Shahdadkot frantically tried to flee their homes over the weekend as a wall of water threatened to burst mud berms and drown the entire city in Pakistan‘s Sindh province. Three weeks into the worst natural disaster in Pakistan’s history, [...]
