Kirsten Price - Music Review

By Sylia Hsu, HOT INDIE NEWS .com

Date Published: October 22, 2008

Upon first hearing Kirsten Price, one might think her voice is a bit like Duffy. Personally, Price is in a whole different league. The music is hot, Price's sexy, sultry voice is hot, and the album just sizzles. Price has power, poise and a sensuous style that many singers strive for but never quite reach or at best, can only forge an imitation.

What is the most notable is the wonderful use of classical music to build momentum, suspense and anticipation. In addition, the sound effects that introduce or are interjected in to the different songs add to the effect. The fusion in to jazz, pop or R&B doesn't disappoint.

All the songs were different and had several somethings to call their own. 'Possibilities' is just smooth and filled with soul with a rolling beat akin to waves breaking on the beach. 'Red Hot' entices with danger before hitting a modern pop rhythm, haunting and breathless. 'Let Me Go' was filled with sadness and anger, a lover fed up but never goes overboard.

In 'Bring Me Back', Price's voice changes completely to an almost Macy Gray like quality when she hits the high notes. When she hits the deep notes she takes you with her in to the well of emotion. The music and words hold a sweet hope that reach a wonderful crescendo that doesn't go so far up that you can't come down.

'5 Days Old' adds futuristic sound effects to start off the piece that is soon offset by Price's voice, which sounds almost gritty and bluesy before suddenly turning to a dance beat. This song truly makes the listener surf waves.

In 'Crazy Beautiful', the title of the song says it all about this bouncy, sassy, crazy beauty. Fun and flirty, the music celebrates the essence of a strong woman. 'Fall' is haunting and sensual, the beginning can be used for the next 007 flick. Lovely and sweet is how this finishes.

'All Right', 'Freedom' and 'Magic Tree' all go for a rock and roll flourish with an uplifting beat, along with a unique gospel quality.

Everything about Price, from the voice to the lyrics, are all her own. The mix of musical genres, everything from classical to jazz to R&B, blend together effortlessly. What was especially enticing about Price's work is how, on a dime, the beat, the atmosphere, the whole song can change and become something different yet still maintain the style and message it started off with. Almost as if several points of view can be presented through the voice and music. Originality is what this artist truly encompasses.
