Ashley Lennon Thomas: Sparkle Plenty - Music Review

My first impression of this singer when listening to the voice is way too high pitched and airy. Over and over I kept asking myself the same question – Where is the originality? Pretty much all her songs are too corny, with hints here and there of teen pop songwriting and overused topics, like love lost, love desired, love acquired, or anything else that would be swimming inside a sweet 16 year old's heart. The voice isn't special, and the music and lyrics are not special. It's amazing that people with her abilities are even able to acquire record deals when there have been hundreds of singer-songwriters before them who have done exactly the same thing.
Song after song is filled with the same long and whiny voice and I found myself sometimes trying to decipher what she was saying. There is nothing impressive about the production of her songs, and the quaint, folksy songs Ashley Lemon Thomas produces could use a touch of experimentation, whether it's for the lyrics or the singing. Her songs are ordinary, yet sugar-coated, which can be heard the most in songs like "Blue" and "Honeywild" – a tune with unbearably simple instrumentals and longwinded and wailing vocals. She has not mastered the art of the simple kind of music that's nice for reading in a den on a Sunday afternoon, this music is cliché and predictable. The one upbeat song I heard was "Like I Can", but it was the only one. The music, for the most part, all sounds exactly alike, especially "Only Time" and "For Sure" (which are mirror images of each other.)
