Alfonso Velez: Make It Plain - Music Review

A little bit country, a little bit James Taylor, a little bit soft rock and folk music – Alfonso Velez brings you back! His music seems to be released during the wrong era because songs like "Isabelle's Jinx," "Eye of the Hurricane," and, well, pretty much the rest of his music belong on the radios of barber shops and farm houses from at least 30 or 40 years ago across the North American countryside. Velez's music is completely and utterly influenced from past pop hits of today's youth's parent's generation – so much so that I cannot even imagine how his music could be widely released today. The songs are definitely easy on the ears, and fits nicely with the older family member's dusty collection folk records. Being a member of the younger generation, myself, however, I did thoroughly enjoy "I Don't Want T'be" and "The Granite Rope." The simple guitar strokes in the background remind me just a bit of whatever genre Damien Rice or Iron & Wine is apart of. It's slow, simple, and relaxing. I would have to say, though, that the most confusing part of his music is the tone – I don't know if he's happy or sad!
