Jetsunma: Delog - Music Review

What is it with me? I mean – do I have THE worst luck on the planet? My woman of two years dumps my behind for some kid 10 yrs younger than me that has green hair, I have to move in with my mom at 32. My 33rd birthday was spent in the gutter with an empty bottle of Guinness (ok, so not ALL bad) and now I am reviewing Jetsuma which is, unfortunately for me, electronica and dance. I cannot seem to escape this genre of electronically generated music – it just follows me. I think the gods above are attempting to siphon off my grey matter for some off the wall cloning experiment. I trudge on though – realizing that not all of this genre is crappy… just 99.9% of it is really just some pimple-faced kid in his mom’s basement with a casio keyboard.
I have given a listen to several tracks off of the album “Delog” by Jetsuma and came to the conclusion that it is more, um, trance then it is electronic. Enya has nothing to worry about though. The first few songs I gave a listen to either warranted a nap or ear plugs – sometimes both. Singing in this style of music is not readily done and for good reason – singing to purely mixed tracks fiddles with the harmony. It makes the music disjointed and often times just not good. What is also weird is the seemingly political slant Jetsuma takes – dance and electronic is about the movement. I can see this being used as the musical backdrop for a performance art piece done by new age hippies.
Step Down is a good song though – about the wasting of youth. The music and lyrics are incredibly surreal, visceral and lifelike – so not electronic other than the apparent exclusive use of electronic instrumentation but, as a musical whole, Jetsuma really cannot be squeezed or pigeonholed or type casted into the role of Dance unless you are doing it VERY slowly.
I have to make a point to mention “Ain’t We Deep” – a song that is very political. I LOVE it because I hate this government. It serves as a message about how horrible this war is for us. It makes perfect sense and puts all of this crap into an interesting light. There is not much music to it – all very basic – but it is the words that are important. I am liking this group song after song – it’s easier when you come to the conclusion that they are neither electronic or dance… political trance? Haha – I don’t know – they’re good so listen.
