Funky Kidz: Funky Kidz - Music Review

I have to admit with a sad heart that this is a new low for me. I mean – seriously – a new low. I never thought that I would ever and I mean EVER have to review… a children’s album. I don’t like rap or hip hop. I certainly have no love lost for electronic or dance and hell – even my opinion of country music is not at all high. Children’s music is an entirely new low. I loathe it.
Ok – sure – kids need music too and I am all for it. The songs we used to listen to as children were fine – they weren’t all that intricate or whatever but they were good enough for our level of understanding. What I really despise is kids music that has children singing songs that are popular right now! There is no reason on this earth why kids should be singing songs from Eminem or DMX! No reason whatsoever that would make any bit of sense out of children singing songs about sex and drugs – even in innuendo! It disgusts me like preteen beauty pageants.
What cheeses my ritz cracker the most is that I feel it is an insult to the real musician or artist that worked hard to write the song, perform it and make it famous – to make them musical juggernauts on the battlefield that is the music industry.
Funky Kids adapted a few songs to kids tune – like Yellow Submarine but thankfully there isn’t much along those lines. They actually used songs that were rooted in Christianity bible study class for years – “He’s Got the Whole World in your Hands” for instance. There are also several Wizard of Oz remakes including one of my favorite songs (don’t laugh): “Somewhere Over the Rainbow”. I hate seeing classics being messed with.
I have to admit that Funky Kidz is not a bad album for kids. The songs are vastly not performed by children and they seem more like the original tracks then some bad kiddie remake. I think it is very important for a child to listen to and understand music – doing so in a “real” way is more an effective tool then blatantly poorly remaking them. This album combines song classic songs with traditional songs for children making is a nice mix of diversity that any parent could be happy with. I was very glad to see it was not another one of those “Kids Pop” albums.
