Crooked Stilo: Malablados - Music Review

Rap to me is another excuse to piss and moan about someone keeping you down. It really is quite whiny if you listen to 98% of it you will get that impression. The other things you will get from rap and hip hop is how to score chicks, that money is god and you should really put a cap in someone’s ass because they looked at you wrong and that is disrespecting your rep. Needless to say I don’t much like rap or hip hop. At least today’s version of it. I liked it back in the beginning days when the Sugar Hill Gang and RUN DMC were running the show. I like some DMX and even a little Eminem but that is where I draw the line. Crooked Stilo is RAP and Hip-Hop. I’ve been told they’re pretty banging and maybe, just maybe my mind can be swayed a bit.
I will tell you right now that Crooked Stilo is set apart for one specific reason: they are Latino West Coast Hip Hop. I’m a moron really as to me – a gringo from the East Coast – rap is rap. We have a set idea of what it is and what it is all about. I’m thankful I got to hear this style of Hip Hop and Rap because you know what? It is fresh. It’s quite different than anything else I have ever heard.
The musicality is tight, unique and interesting. It mixes the usual hip hop and rap elements of mixing and electronica with Latino instrumentation. My Spanish is rusty so I can’t really comment on the lyrical content but hey – the vocals are tight and work well with the music that is presented with it. There are even times when someone steps up and actually sings – much like Chester from Linkin Park. That makes it refreshingly different and don’t shoot me but I think I like West Coast Latino Hip Hop more than East Coast Gangsta stuff. Definitely give it a listen if hip hop is your thing (and if you know Spanish!).
