Bald Eagle: Hot Shoulders - Music Review

Bald Eagle: Hot Shoulders - Music Review With songs like "Rodents of Unusual Size", Sharks are F*cked Up" and "Those Are Cobras, Man" you can't help but to wonder where this music will be going. Could it be some funny crap like a Sandler spoof? Could it actually BE serious rock? Not many bands who ARE serious come up with song titles like this then make the actual song serious - it's like making chocolate cake without the chocolate. It defeats the purpose. So - one has to ask - what IS the purpose? Funny? Serious? Just plain crappy?

I will say this - odd song titles or not - the band can play. They can friggin wail with the best of them. It sounds great and if the lead singer never opened his mouth you would have a golden band here. Seriously, dude - don't sing. It is a disgrace to music every where - even David Hasselhoff. Lyrically it's just odd. Song titles really play in here - I would turn away from the CD rack with titles likes this just because I like music that at least sounds like they want to take it seriously.

Bad Eagle kind of took the tongue in cheek stuff punk is great at and turned it into rock. Unfortunately, it does not transcend genre. It really doesn't. It shows even less when you are musically gifted. You need that sort of crudeness to pull off such a thing. I liked the musicianship found on the CD. There were some moments of lyrical and vocal clarity but those were so far and few between to make the singing at all redeemable. Some tunes even became this weird pop stuff and I would just envision some little girl holding hands with a guy in a giant rat suit running in slow motion through a field - kind of fascinating if you think about it. Unfortunately the song itself didn't work at all in the chorus, not the lyrics and certainly not the instrumentation. This is why rats stay in the sewer.

If you want to listen to something that is more punk than rock then by all means try out Bald Eagle. Musically they are excellent. Vocals are raw and the songs odd and a bit edgy so it's right up your alley if you are rooted in punk.
