The beginning of this album started out really well. For those of you that have never listened to Pinback before, most of their songs have great catchy hooks but nothing over the top amazing. They're a pretty chill band - one that can be reserved for a rainy day or late at night or coming down off of hallucinogens listening, any period in your life when you need something with pianos or drum beats or feel particularly introspective. I've come to the conclusion that whenever I want any of those things, I listen to Pinback. Pinback is that band that you can consistently depend on. However, for my sake and their's, it would be kind of interesting to see them take a risk sometime. Maybe even just once?
The best thing I can say about this album is that it sounds exactly like any other Pinback album. The worst thing I can say about this album is that it sounds exactly like any other Pinback album. Notable Pinback formulaic songs are "Good to Sea," and "From Nothing to Nowhere." The songs"Walters," and "Devil You Know" vary from Pinbacks usual repertoire by throwing in a tiny bit more rock. It's enough for me and other Pinback fans/children from the early 90's but might not be enough for everyone. In a world of My Morning Jacket and Yellowcard, it's enough for me.
The only song that is even close to bad is "How We Breathe" and that's just the fault of the chorus. Other than that, even this song is pretty damn good.
I dunno, kids. You just might have to buy this one...
