Reality Serum: Hop In - Music Review

Is electronic hip hop the new "in thing"? Are electronic guitar chords over echoing lyrics emerging as the current style of pop indie music? The ambience in this album is distinct, it's a little Sci-fi, and has some 1980s influences, especially with the single repetition of the sharp drums in the background. One thing that I have to give to this band is originality. The synthesized, electro – atmosphere sets you up for even more electronic, echoing singing. I think it might be some people to get difficult to get into this music because songs like "Breathless" and "Here We Go" leave an unpleasant residue in the ear, a bit spooky and hard to follow. Then that perception is completely changed with "My Life".
It almost seems at times like it's the wrong singer for the wrong type of music, and they have just mixed up genres. But I think that's part of the uniqueness of the music, and a conscious attempt by Reality Serum to blend the rapper's voice of the lead singer with that of almost U2-like, ambient rock music in the background. The sound is acquired, but after listening a few times to the rare style of Reality Serum, I don't think they would have any problem finding their niche in popular music.
