It's dirty hard rock, hip hop, a little bit of Lenny Kravits, a little electronic rap. Unless Mike Ladd is delivering his DJish message at the end of a song like "Trouble Shot", the lyrics are completely incomprehensible, and like most artists this is probably somewhat intentional – getting the music right is the point and thent he voice layered on top with the right emotions just gives it more flavor. Of course lyrics are important but one can't help but feel that while listening to this music that the groove of the song and moving along to the music is just more important.
When I listen to his voice I also hear a little bit of The Mars Volta, a little Gorillaz, dusted a bit with old school, late 1980s, hip hop beats. The trumpets he uses in songs like "Black Orientalist" and "Wild Out Day" sound like they would fit in perfectly in a quickly-edited chase scene of a satirical film on crazy teens escaping from the law. On other occasions, like in "Afrostatic", it is just too much – too much scattered yelling into the mic and too much heavy percussion and just loud noises in the background. In the end this music is lively, unusual, and is experimental in this electronica, hip hop record.
