Kate Nash: Made Of Bricks - Music Review

This indie rock music has sharp beats with quick percussion, jazzy influences and makes for a nice album to head-bang to at a party downtown. In songs like "Play" and "Shit Song" lyrics are scarce and repetitive, but in the end are just further pushing in Nash's message through a pleasantly-crafted song. For the most part her songs, like "Foundations" and "Dickhead" have lyrics which are direct, explicit, and expressive. Yet I think it's her brutal honesty which is translated into a carefree letter of her emotions with a little bit of rhythm and blues, and a twist of humor.
Some songs like "Birds" are folksy and slow and add yet another kind of variety to the album, yet also sometimes one cannot help but get the feeling that her voice sounds distinctly familiar to certain current indie pop sensations at the top of the charts. As she speaks with a voice that sounds sweeter than her words, her loud and clear voice she take her into any genre, be it rock, folk, r&b, indie music.
She knows exactly what she wants to say in every song, and so the purpose isn't really to flower each track with sugary metaphors, but to musically expressive the truth of her experience and how she feels about the world through catchy beats and a voice which nicely and clearly flies out the speakers, whether she's hitting some high notes in the heavy hitting "Pumpkin Soup" or, like in "Mariella", just singing in the relaxed, soft and even tones through fantastic theatrical melodies.
