Cornelius: Gum (EP) - Music Review

Could this group be entering a new genre all their own? Right from the very song I heard ("Gum") I knew that Cornelius was taking me somewhere I had never quite been before (in a good way). They have songs with Radiohead's soft yet are eerie vocals and Bjork's alluring instrumental experimentation, like in "Kling Klang".
Some songs like "Turn Turn" even hint back to the cutting edge electro-hip hop beats of early Linkin Park work. Their music definitely does not seem like something the mass crowds can dance to, yet it still has a place in a modern world of innovative music precisely because the sound is so original, with poetic melodies and "fresh" beats. The choices made for the number of specific electronic sounds used in each song doesn't seem like much at all sometimes, but when chosen and put in place everything sounds quite rhythmic and entrancing, like in "Cue".
A listener could not immediately foresee the direction of Cornelius's music which just adds to their overall attractiveness. Their music, full of electro-harmonies, is quiet and beautiful at the same time. If experimental rock, trip-hop, or electronica is your thing then you should definitely give Cornelius a listen.
