Draw a Distance. Draw a Border—An impressive debut album from Canadian foursome, The Details. I wasn't sure what to expect, but I was happily surprised with the opening track, "Always, Always, Always Never," which sings about letting go but remembering your roots. It's a soft opener that lets you ease into the overall eclectic album and throws you a bit off course from the direction of the rest of the songs. The guitar riffs and melody are a bit routine in the first track, but the lyrics are clever and relatable. "Don't you understand sweetheart that we love you, but hate the ugly sin that you are." With lines like these and covering topics that speak to anyone and everyone, the album is a must-hear for indie fans.
Tracks like "Reunion Souvenirs" and "Demons Heathens" have a different feel with a harder rock sound. Keep in mind the comparative factor—harder here is not head banging, but simply louder and more passionate. Lead singer and guitarist Jon Plett has a refreshingly natural voice that lends itself well to the sound the band is trying to create. His voice isn't shrill, which is a nice break from what we tend to hear among indie vocalists today. With Keli Martin on bass, Shaun Gibson on Drums and Sean Vidal on guitar, this group has really caught onto something that lies in between the cracks of the rock and indie genres. The songs are addicting much to the likes of bands like Straylight Run. If you're looking to rock out, you may want to steer clear, but if you are looking for something that's familiar but still new in its own right, then check out The Details.
