Imagine my surprise when I began watching a video of The Press Project. Their album, "Get Right" is so funky, soulful and smooth, that a group of New Hampshire white guys blasting lyrics and lively rhythm is the last thing I expected.
I'm far from hating. "Get Right" is a straight up classic. Drawing influences from The Roots, Jurassic5, and according to the group itself, Soulive, The Press Project spit hot rhymes and rhythms. They vibe towards the R&B side of funk, but some songs like "Rally" elicit such an arm-bouncing rush ("let me see ya bounce!") that strangers next to you and your headphones will wonder whether or not you are epileptic.
Other songs slow down the groove and let you really appreciate the soulful singing and virtuosic musicianship. "Music Maker" blends heartfelt singing with precise rap to produce a sexy backdrop and formidable lyrics: "When the pen cuts the paper the ink bleeds my meaning."
Interspersed throughout the album are four musical interludes, each called a "moment" (i.e, "Moment pt 1, Moment pt 2, etc). The moments break up the album nicely, and allow you to take a minute and breathe along with the jazzed up instrumentals ("Moment pt 4" has lyrics). Little things like these "Moments" distinguish The Press Project from other groups, and add a nice flavor to "Get Right."
The most powerful key to The Press Project's sound is their sincerity. You can hear the hard work that went into creating and producing the album. The drums are crisp, the guitar is funky and searing, and the lyrics are razor sharp. Appreciate The Press Project's honesty and optimism. Like they say in their track "Good Day," "Every day I wake I'm dreaming it's a good day." Funky and fresh, keep "Get Right" spinning.
