MxPx: Secret Weapon - Music Review

A long time ago in a galaxy far far away, in my early foray into punk rock, I would go to Tara Job's house and we would compare the newest albums we both had purchase with purchase with our allowance every week. Tara eagerly showed me her copy of 'Teenage Politics' one day. 'I guess they're ok," I said, "But don't bother to burn me a copy though, it's cool. You could just put 'Punk Rawk Show' on a mix for me."
So I'm listening to MxPx now, now that it's been almost ten years for both of us since then. I was hoping we both grew up in the same way when I picked out this album.
And we did both grow up, only I think MxPx were dragging their heels a bit more. This album does show a bit more maturity than 'Teenage Politics', with songs like 'Top of the Charts' which illustrates that by being slower.
Songs like 'Drowning', 'Chop Shop,' and 'Bass So Low' (which...doesn't actually have a bass solo in it...but the next song does) are as catchy as 'Punk Rawk Show' but nothing that would have even amazed my 14 year old self either.
Songs like 'Sad, Sad Song' and 'You're on Fire' are MxPx level of annoying, without the few catchy hooks they can sometimes pull off and with retarded lyrics ('now that you're on a fire, a new day has begun. now that you're on fire, you are like the sun'?) to boot.
Skip this album and wait for the MxPx 'Mediocre Hits' album to come out.
