Singer and songwriter Kate Nash has taken the theory of repetition and molded it a respectable musical pursuit full of catchy musical licks. Signed on with Fiction Records, she's created something worthwhile listening to. Vocally, Nash has been compared to Lily Allen and, through guilty pleasures such as "Foundations" and "Merry Happy," she shows why talented British gals are at the top of their game nowadays. Aesthetically, she evokes the poetic-fugue tendencies of Regina Spektor especially in "Mariella."
Nash -Dublin born and London raises the bar musically speaking. Her album "Made of Bricks," falls back on the idea that not all little girls are made of sugar and spice and everything nice; some are made up of harder material. On most of the tracks, Nash channels her inward aggressive and bitter edge; her songs teem with harsh truths and feature a lot of her frustration with her peers.
Songs such "Dickhead" and "Shit Song" are clear examples of this. Other songs feature detailed step-by-step accounts of specific memories and experiences, such as the situation with the ticket and the train in "Bird." Other songs are more reflective on relationships and on the "what could have been," as highly suggested by the endearing and sweet "Nicest Thing." Some tracks are unfortunately a bit more mundane, despite their intriguing titles like "Pumpkin Soup" and the annoyingly repetitive "Play."
Nevertheless, as she indicates on the track titled "Mouthwash," Kate Nash is just a girl with a "thousand opinions and not the time to explain." No worries though. Her music although simple and stark (brutal at times) is refreshingly charming. Overall, through the span of a single album, she most likely will have listeners in awe, pondering the complexities of her thoughtful dichotomies and combinations of stark truths with upbeat tunes.
