Ulises: Projection Beautiful - Music Review

The twenty-something Ulises shows his youth and on his debut album, Projection Beautiful. Most of the tracks are neither bad nor good; they all seem to find a way to mediocrity, a purgatory of sound. The same theme covers the beats, production, and vocals. The basic beats give the songs a decent dance-flavor, but not much else. Ulises's voice is too smooth and straightforward to really get a crowd excited, and so even the best part about his tracks (the rhythms) are counterbalanced, leaving the listener with the same encompassing theme of ordinariness.
For some reason, I liked "Far 2 Reach." It contains a little more serious tone, and goes through a few more changes than his other songs. Other decent songs like "Cancer," "Projection Beautiful," and "Alone N the Dark" certainly don't put a strain on the ears, but they don't do much in a positive direction either. Projection Beautiful suffers from sameness—most of the tracks sound much too similar to one another, and so no single can emerge as the true leader of the average pack. The blending of smooth and sexy Latin sounds with soulful, bumping R&B music is a refreshing and ambitious project. But Ulises's accomplishments (he writes, sings, and produces all of the music) are obscured by the albums lack of beauty. Instead, its beauty is only skin deep.
