Molly's Lip: The Pneumonia Rose - Music Review

I quickly jumped on calling Molly's Lip because it's a Nirvana song. And I maybe had a huge thing for Nirvana when I was like ....twelve.
I enjoyed Molly's Lip because I also used to be a confused fourteen year old punk, which I feel are the audience who'd best appreciate Molly's Lip. A less harder Casualties for the more sissy punks?
The first song, "Cynderella Cyndrome" is pretty rad. The whiny vocals combined with the catchy hook remind me of Rancid, circa "Out Come the Wolves Era," which I'll never admit if you catch me face to face but I still feel it's pretty punk rock.
A couple of songs reminded me of Operation Ivy's sense of...just really raw tracks, like Molly's songs "Disarray" and "South Side". For some reason, Operation Ivy did that style a little better though, perhaps because they didn't let Tim sing?
The vocals throughout this whole album are in the same Tim Armstrong/Justin Sane/Generic Punk nasally whine which might turn a few people off because they assume that if the singer can't sing, the rest of the band must not be able to play. I get excited when I hear bad vocals, usually but this time, Molly's Lip is one band who can actually play. I mean, they play the same bass/guitar/drums/singer format but so do most other bands. And they play well for their genre.
Sometimes, they try to show off in their genre but because they're putting themselves into the punk rock/early grunge pigeon hold, they're somewhat limited in their availabilities in that. Songs like "That I've Done Louder", "Don't Come Back Today", and "Waste My Time," they mix it up with slowing it down, throwing in guitar solos, turning the bass up or even occasionally showing off the poor vocal skills.
This is a hard genre to honestly appreciate. If it's not punk enough, it's 'pop punk' and you get no respect for that. If it's TOO punk, it turns into 'street punk' like the aforementioned The Casualties and it sucks. I feel Molly's Lip as come close to the healthy medium. I'd go to their shows but like most self respecting punks, I wouldn't pay more than $8 for the cd.
